Daily walk prevents breast cancer

New research has found women who walk an hour every day can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. Even more encouraging, more frequent and vigorous exercise was found to provide additional protection.

The study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention followed more than 73, 000 women over 17 years. Researchers found a 14 per cent reduced risk when compared to women with sedentary lifestyles.

Exercise consisting of over seven hours per week was associated with a 25 per cent reduced risk.

This is encouraging news for women who aren't very active or sporty. "The nice message here is, you don't have to go out and run a marathon to lower your breast cancer risk, …go for a nice, leisurely walk an hour a day to lower risk," says Alpa Patel, senior epidemiologist.

Walking appears to help cut down the amount of body fat that is directly linked to cancer-stimulating hormones such as insulin and oestrogen. Being physically active can improve insulin control and burn fat in high-risk areas of the body. Excess fat around the waist may affect one's breast cancer risk more than the same amount of fat around the hips or thighs.

Strength training (exercising with weights) is also beneficial to help burn off abdominal fat. Spot exercising, such as doing sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles, but is not an effective way to lose belly fat according to Harvard Medical School.

"Diet is also important. Pay attention to portion size, and emphasize complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and lean protein over simple carbohydrates such as white bread, refined-grain pasta, and sugary drinks," they added.

Unhealthy saturated and trans fats have also been linked to abdominal obesity and one's breast cancer risk. Saturated and trans fats are commonly found in highly processed foods that are often high in energy and low in essential nutrients.

All fats are not harmful to one's health and are actually needed to lose weight, balance hormones and fight cancer. Unsaturated, or healthy fats are found in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These fats are found primarily in fish, plant oils, seeds and nuts – all of which have been
shown to lower one's risk of developing breast cancer.

Drastically cutting the amount of energy in one's diet, especially while engaging in regular exercise is not recommended. Too little units of energy can force the body into starvation mode, slowing one's metabolism and ironically storing more fat around the mid-section.

The best weapon in overcoming breast cancer is the ability to prevent it from occurring in the first place. It's important to apply proactive lifestyle habits in one's life versus reactively trying to treat or reverse cancer when it could be too late.

A British queen & 3 kings in waiting: The first photograph to show 4 sovereigns together since the Victorian period

The dress code was lounge suits, the protocol low-key. But if Prince George's christening hardly smacked of a state occasion, it will certainly be regarded as a momentous one by posterity.

For this photograph is the first time the world has seen the Queen alongside the next sovereign, the one after that and the one after that.

Here is monarch number 40 with numbers 41, 42 and 43 in the post-1066 chart.

Lineage: The Queen is flanked by William holding George and Charles. The first time a British monarch has been pictured with three heirs since Queen VictoriaLine of succession: The Queen is flanked by William holding George and Charles. The first time a British monarch has been pictured with three heirs since Queen Victoria

This official picture is more than just an enchanting family scene. It will appear in every history book on the British monarchy years after everyone featured in it has gone.

And the historians will not only be focusing on the baby. They'll be talking about the Queen.

It is an image with instant and obvious echoes from an earlier age. Because just one other monarch in history has had the pleasure of looking three successors in the eye — the Queen's great-great-grandmother.

That moment was captured when Queen Victoria attended the christening of Prince Edward of York — the future Edward VIII — at White Lodge in Richmond Park in 1894.

He lies on Queen Victoria's lap — a baby who will live to see the Moon landings, held in the arms of a woman born in the reign of George III.

Behind the severe-looking great-grandmother (despite producing nine children, Victoria famously detested small babies), stand the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, and the Duke of York, the future George V.

Now reflect on the span of history in the photo from Prince George's christening.

Here is a (much happier) Queen, born in the year of the General Strike, alongside a great-grandson who, when he reaches her age, will be leading the monarchy into the 22nd century.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert taken in May 1854. Victoria famously detested small babiesQueen Victoria and Prince Albert taken in May 1854. Victoria famously detested small babies

What the scene underlines, in a typically understated way, is the fact that our Queen is right up there alongside Victoria in the pantheon of the greats.

In any hereditary organisation — or business for that matter — the primary duty of the boss is to hand it on in at least as good a state as he or she found it.

For if a constitutional monarchy stands for anything, it is for continuity, for permanence.

Victoria certainly achieved that, though that little baby in her lap would go on to inflict untold damage to the Crown when he abdicated four decades later.

Yet, there would be a similar christening scene just two years after this one. The only surviving photograph of that event, however, shows only two monarchs — Queen Victoria holding the Duke of York's second son, Prince Albert.

He, of course, would go on to succeed his reckless elder brother as George VI, restore the monarchy's good name and leave it in extremely safe hands.

The Queen has led the institution through all manner of change in a turbulent world.

When she came to the throne in 1952, Britain was a monocultural society that went to church on Sundays, still regarded itself as an imperial power and was in the early stages of the Cold War.

Her first act at her first investiture as Queen was to pin a Victoria Cross on Private Bill Speakman of the Black Watch for heroism in Korea.

Since then, society has changed at a faster pace than any previous monarch has known.

Be it 24-hour mass media, the rise in life expectancy, the end of deference or demographic change on an unprecedented scale, Britain has undergone a greater social and cultural transformation under Elizabeth than even under Victoria.

And that has presented great challenges to an institution rooted in tradition.

But while Victoria sealed herself away from the outside world for much of her life, Elizabeth II has not only adapted to change, but embraced it, too.

The official portrait for the christening of Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge, photographed in The Morning Room at Clarence House in London yesterdayThe official portrait for the christening of Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge, photographed in The Morning Room at Clarence House in London yesterday

She has opened up palaces and royal treasures, launched royal websites, balanced the books, redefined the entire role of the modern monarchy and created a household run on merit rather than pedigree.

In doing so, she has quietly but steadily built secure new foundations beneath the throne for those three successors.

Opinion polls show that the monarchy is as popular today as it was more than 60 years ago, and that is no small achievement.

Because her success has been achieved slowly and without much  noise, we have tended not to take much notice — beyond the occasional Jubilee.

We continue to take it for granted that the Queen will just carry on turning up and doing her stuff because she always does.

In less than two years, however, she will pass another milestone (there are still one or two to go).
In September 2015, she will overtake Queen Victoria to become the longest-reigning sovereign in our history.

While she will refuse to mark the occasion in any way, the rest of the world will surely acknowledge what it means.

The history of Britain is segmented and punctuated by the comings and goings of its Royal Family, by births, marriages and deaths.

Wednesday's happy christening scene will command pride of place among the souvenirs and photographs jostling for space on the Queen's famously crowded desk.

But it will be much more than a picture of a baptism. It will be the portrait of a reign.

10 Strategies to Help Solve Your Marriage Problems

Many good marriages slip into crisis because we don't or won't believe how much work it takes to keep relationships humming at optimal levels. Another reason is a simple failure in imagination.

But—if successful courting requires commitment, hard work and imagination to pull off … then why does it surprise us when neglect hurts relationships after we walk down the aisle? She wouldn't have married you if you took her for granted—why risk everything now?

There are many good strategies if we want to restore a problematic—or "under the weather"—marriage. All Pro Dad suggests the following 10 for men who want to get the ball rolling:

1. Pray for your spouse. Chances are you launched your marriage with both promises and prayers. Pray for your spouse, and ask for guidance as you pledge to make the kind of effort that simply won't float without turning to God every day.

2. Surround yourselves with people in healthy relationships. Some of those negative patterns involved friends. Hook up with a faith community where marriage is valued and there's widespread support for making yours work.

3. Choose to love. Love may have come easy when it was brand new. But love over the long haul is as much a choice as it is an emotion. Choice is an act of maturity and it has a much better track record than emotion left to make its way on its own.

4. Act as if your spouse's happiness is more important than your own.  Putting our spouse first nurtures trust, gratitude, generosity and affection. It can also lead to kissing!

5. Put the relationship ahead of everything, including your children. It's unfortunate, but time has a way of eating away at our priorities. "You're the most important thing in my life" gives way to "My work … the family business … the children … my aging parents … even golf, football or drinking …" Marriages don't work well when our partner plays second fiddle to anything – even the children. It's a fact - the happiest kids are those with parents who love one-another best.

6. Start over from scratch. Ask her out. Make sure you remember why you did the first time and build from there. When did you last talk for hours, hold hands at a movie, or smooch behind a plant in the mall? Get silly about one-another. If you don't feel like it, do it anyway- then you'll remember why.

7. Stop taking one-another for granted. Say "thank you" for that cup of coffee. Celebrate obscure anniversaries. Tell her how much it means to you that she cooks a great meal—or vice versa. Notice the haircut. Ask her out. Clean her car. Pay attention to the little things and act like someone who values the relationship.

8. Get counseling. You say you can't afford it? Believe us, it's cheaper than divorce! Most counseling simply involves a few sessions to get the communication flowing again. For guys, a willingness to talk in that context sends a huge positive message to your spouse.

9. Follow the counseling with an action plan. Just like a personal fitness program, counseling comes with homework and an action plan over time. Draw up the plan, ask friends you trust to help hold you accountable, then follow through. When both spouses take responsibility, anything is possible.

10. Change the patterns. Do you always come home angry? Then stop the car a block away and pray about it first. Does she always nag you when you leave dirty clothes on the floor? Try getting changed in a different room and initiate a new reflex. Do you always fight about discipline? Try agreeing with her decisions and supporting her 100 percent—you may find the kids act better because you're not fighting. You've heard the old joke:

 - Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I do that …"

- Doctor: "Well, don't do that anymore!

Mike Bickle: How I Overcame a Boring Prayer Life

God is going to fill the church with enjoyable prayer that is refreshing and invigorating.

I probably know more about boring, unanointed prayer than any other person on Earth--or I ought to. I've engaged in enough of it during my lifetime! Though I have felt called for more than 20 years to be a person of prayer, it was not until recently that I learned the true secret to a successful prayer life.

I started searching for the secret in my college days, but it eluded me. I read books on prayer and the deeper life in God, but when it got down to actually praying, I was an absolute failure.

I religiously scheduled time to spend alone with God. Yet my efforts at praying were frustrating and unfulfilling.

I dreaded prayer time. I'd made a vow to God that I'd pray an hour every night, and I made up my mind to stick to it, regardless. But after months of drudgery, I told Him, "Lord, I really love You, but I don't enjoy praying."

I still remember the awful condemnation I felt. A sense of defeat nearly overwhelmed me as I shook my head and sighed, "Lord, will I ever like talking to You?"

At the time, I was living in an apartment with three other Christian guys. Every night around 8:45, my roommates would notice that I was starting to get uptight because my prayer time, which I had designated as 9 to 10 p.m., was approaching. I hated going into my room to pray! I knew the next hour was going to be lifeless and boring.

Who would ever have guessed that eventually I would enjoy prayer so much I would resign as pastor of my church to lead a 24-hour-a-day prayer ministry?

My journey to enjoyable prayer began with a study of the tabernacle of David (see Acts 15:16-17). The tabernacle of David refers in part to a 24-hour prayer ministry that King David established. David put musicians and singers before the ark in place of the veil that Moses had used (see 1 Chr. 25:1-7). He valued the prophetic spirit (spirit of inspiration) resting on the singers and musicians that inspired the intercessors to soar in power.

David's model for what I call "intercessory worship" grew out of his primary life desire--"to behold the beauty of the Lord" (Ps. 27:4, NKJV; see also 145:5). The desire to dwell in the beauty realm of God is a vital foundation for intercessory worship in the spirit of the tabernacle of David.

Isaiah prophesied about a paradigm of prayer marked by joy. The Lord promised, "'I will...make [you] joyful in My house of prayer'" (Is. 56:7). Imagine the implications! God is going to fill the church with enjoyable prayer that is refreshing and invigorating.

Revelation tells us "the 24 elders around the throne fall down before Jesus, each having a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints" (5:8). The harp speaks of worship; the bowl speaks of intercession. When the harp (worship music) comes together with the bowl (intercession), a spiritual dynamic occurs that enhances our enjoyment of prayer.

God ordained that the worship music around the throne flow interactively with intercession. God's songs and God's prayers flow together. This is the secret to the "enjoyable prayer" that Isaiah prophesied about.

I believe the Holy Spirit is orchestrating a global prayer strategy in these days that will far eclipse any other prayer movement in church history. He is raising up 24-hour-a-day "prayer furnaces" that are vital to the Great Commission. These full-time prayer ministries will be the key to reaching unchurched peoples all over the world and the foundation for the full restoration of the tabernacle of David in the generation in which the Lord returns.

I am now the director of one such prayer ministry, called the International House of Prayer, in Kansas City, Missouri. Much of our structure and the principles on which the ministry is based are posted on our Web site (www.ihopkc.com). We try to follow the pattern established by David, in which worship and intercession go hand in hand and are inspired by holy fascination with God.

With this model, I don't expect prayer ever to be boring again.

Inspired: Meet the teenager who launched a jewelry company at age 14, now set to rake in $250 million

Bella Weems
Entrepreneur: Bella Weems, 17, was just 14 when she launched custom jewelry company Origami Owl, which is set to earn $250million this year

It's not every day a new start-up company rakes in $250million in a year; it's even rarer when that company was launched by a 14-year-old.

Bella Weems, from Chandler, Arizona, is now 17, but she was only 14 when she thought up the idea for Origami Owl - a direct sales jewelry company that connects independent associates, referred to as 'designers', with buyers.

After launching in 2010, Origami Owl has grown rapidly into a multi-million dollar enterprise, taking on thousands of different designers nationwide, and is expected to rake in a whopping $250million this year.

Bella says she came up with the idea for Origami Owl at age 14, after she asked her parents for a car for her 16th birthday.

They told her that she should earn the car herself, perhaps by starting a business, so she started brainstorming ways to earn money and decided to make and sell jewelry.

She started brainstorming ways to earn money, and decided to make and sell jewelry.

Her parents matched the $350 she had earned for babysitting, and she enlisted her friends as buyers.

Then she began selling her signature jewelry items – which she now calls Living Lockets – at every opportunity, including house parties, boutiques and local jewelry shows.

'I have always believed that you can do anything you set your mind to,' Bella writes on her website.

'With a focus in sight, I spent hours hosting jewelry parties instead of hanging out with friends,' and ultimately, 'the product started selling itself,' Bella told Forbes.

In 2011, the company adopted a direct sales platform, raking in about $280,000. The following year, sales multiplied by a whopping 86 times.

Now, Origami Owl has over 25,000 independent designers selling pieces at Jewelry Bars – private parties at their homes or other venues around the country.

Those who sign up as designers get to choose from several different starter kits with various lockets, chains and supplies for launching their small businesses.

Ambition: 'I have always believed that you can do anything you set your mind to,' Bella writes on her website

It may have been Bella who founded the company in the first place, but today she relies on members of her family to help run it while she goes to high school.

Her mother Chrissy is co-founder and helped establish Origami Owl's design team, and her two uncles and an aunt help with IT and marketing.

Robin Crossman, the company's chief executive officer, said of the young entrepreneur: 'She's definitely hands-on, but we want her to have as normal a life as she can and to have the opportunity of college.'

Not only has Bella's ambition paid off, but it also helped her achieve her original goal: in 2012, she acquired a white Jeep, which she affectionately named Alice.

The shout-and-scream employer: 5 ways to deal with your FIERY boss

by the Metrognome

Black woman office

Make your protest known. Do not be cowed down by their attitude – if you think they have been unfair to you, request a meeting with them and discuss the matter without arguing or getting emotional.

1) The shout-and-scream boss: Some bosses lose their tempers very quickly, and they deal with their tempers by raging and shouting. "No person can raise his voice on anybody at work, especially if he is a senior," says Prajakta Sule, an HR professional. "If your boss yells at you, remain silent and don't answer in more than monosyllables. Do not look at the ground as if you are guilty, make eye contact. When he or she calms down, pretend that the shouting episode didn't happen at all. Your calmness will probably shame your boss into not repeating such behaviour again."

2) The curt and rude boss: Smriti Goradia worked at a fashion magazine in Mumbai, where her boss never spoke to the staff. "Whenever you requested five minutes, she would curtly say she didn't have time to spare. You couldn't discuss anything with her." Such bosses tend to put up a wall around themselves so that they don't have to deal with pressing matters. "The way to approach an unapproachable boss is to politely ask what time they would be free for a short meeting. Promptly arrive at the time that they give, and say what you have to say in a few sentences. As a follow up to the meeting, instead of approaching them again, email them or text them on their mobile," Prajakta says.

3) The no-you-can't-have-a-holiday boss: There are bosses who never sanction leave for their employees, no matter how urgent the need. "It was always 'No, you can't go on leave," Smriti recalls. "A colleague once had to leave town urgently for a family emergency, but my boss said that leave would not be sanctioned. Finally, her pay was cut for the week that she went on leave." No boss can refuse to grant you leave if you have enough leaves pending, and if you are giving sufficient notice. "Sick leaves can never be refused. For long leaves, a sufficient notice helps," says Foram Engineer*, an HR professional with a national newspaper. "If your boss refuses to grant leave and tries to cut the number of days of holiday, remind him or her that you need the full number of days that you applied for and that you have pending leaves. When you apply for leave, CC a copy to your HR head as well." There are bosses who do not sanction compensatory leaves for overtime. "Again, remind them that you worked on a holiday or after hours. As such, they cannot refuse your request," says Foram.

4) The exclusive boss: These bosses normally have a sycophantic clique comprising their favourite colleagues, and everyone else is an object of derision. "Such bosses will promote only their clique, praise only those within the circle and be nasty to everyone else. Though it is unfair to be passed over for a promotion or a pay raise, you just have to grin and bear it," says Foram. "Make your protest known. Do not be cowed down by their attitude – if you think they have been unfair to you, request a meeting with them and discuss the matter without arguing or getting emotional. State all the facts, discuss your performance, and make a case for why you should be rewarded."

5) The public shaming boss: These bosses insult the staff in full hearing of the office, use offensive language and never have a kind word to say to anyone. "This type of boss is drunk on his or her power in the office. The behaviour stems from insecurity or a sense of persecution from employees, especially if he or she is aware of personal shortcomings," says Prajakta. "When the language gets abusive, draw the line yourself. It may not improve his behaviour, but at least you will have made yourself clear. If the behaviour continues, go to his superior of the HR head and lodge a complaint." However, lodging a complaint against one's boss is also considered unacceptable, so keep it as a last resort.

‘I wish I didn’t work so hard’: Top 5 regrets people make on their deathbed

From Life & Health

old man

For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives. People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality.

I learnt never to underestimate someone's capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.

When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five:

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
This was the most common regret of all. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.

2. I wish I didn't work so hard.
This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children's youth and their partner's companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.
Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.
This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called 'comfort' of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again. When you are on your deathbed, what  others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

When your pet's paw pads become worn, they can cause your dog a lot of pain. When you notice them getting worn and shiny, soak your pet's paws in glass bottle Coca-Cola for about 20 minutes. This will help soothe and heal your pet's tired feet.

Man dies after taking overdose of sweet

Excess of everything is definitely hazardous to health. A postmortem showed John Jackson had 155mg of caffeine per litre of blood in his system when just 10mg would be considered an overdose

 John Jackson

John Jackson

A dad died of a massive caffeine overdose after eating mints bought from his local sweet shop.

John Jackson had no idea the Hero Instant Energy Mints were packed full of the stimulant.

The 40-year-old was found dead by relatives at his home.

Just one of the sweets is said to contain more caffeine than a whole can of a high-energy drink, like Red Bull.

At an inquest in Smethwick yesterday, coroner Robin Balmain said he would be writing to the Department of Health demanding answers over the death of the former painter and decorator.

He said: "This is a potentially very dangerous situation. The level of caffeine is enormous.

" I think it is as certain as it can be that Mr Jackson didn't know that he was going to expose himself to this sort of danger.

Mr Jackson was found dead by his estranged partner and stepdaughter at his flat in Walsall Road, Darlaston on May 2.

The UK-produced mints are sold alongside other sweets, but shocked makers last night stressed they had taken a series of measures to warn about the high caffeine content.

A postmortem examination showed Mr Jackson had 155mg of caffeine per litre of blood in his system, yet just 10mg would have been considered an overdose, according to pathologist Dr Dragana Cvijan.

SHOCKING: Access Bank demands N1million for employment; GTB asks trainees to write own obituaries

gtbankHaving spent almost two unproductive years at home after graduation, Evelyn was badly in need of a job. After passing the aptitude test and first interview, she was pretty confident as she walked out of her second interview for a management trainee position at Access Bank.

But her confidence immediately atrophies like an ice cube thrown into a burning fire when she was told, over the telephone, by an official of the bank that she needed to source a total of N1 million from at least 10 new customers within a week as a prerequisite for being employed.

Her parents immediately kicked against her continuing with the recruitment process saying it was exploitative. But the thought of having to sit at home for an indefinite period in search of another job was far scarier for Evelyn. She was determined to meet the bank's demand.

Hard as she tried, she could only get eight people to open new accounts with the bank. Two days later she got a call from the bank telling her she didn't make the cut.

"In Access Bank it has to be ten over ten or nothing," the voice at the other end of the phone said.

Evelyn was devastated. She felt used and dumped.

"After the second interview, I thought I already had the job," she said.

In fact she was called for the third interview, which is usually a formality, according to an Access Bank source.

John, another applicant, said he didn't feel comfortable raising N1 million as a prerequisite for employment.

"I remembered telling myself this was nonsense. Why would they ask me to get N1 million before I was employed? I didn't even bother to try."

Some of applicants who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES said the bank gave them ten account-opening booklets each carrying Access Bank employee numbers for this purpose.

"When I say the employee numbers on the account-opening booklet, I was confused. Does it mean that I'm running around for someone else to take the credit," wondered another applicant who raised N900,000.00 and was not employed.

Evelyn, who said she is now doing what she described as her dream job, told PREMIUM TIMES one of those who opened an account with her went through a lot of hassles when she tried to withdraw the money she deposited.

"She wasn't given a debit card or chequebook. They kept telling her at the branch that they have issues with her account when she when to withdraw the money she deposited. After paying several visits to the branch over three months she could only manage to withdraw part of the money she deposited."

Access Bank says the practise of asking applicants to generate N1 million within one week is to prepare them for "the rigour of the highly competitive market."

The bank's Head of Corporate Affairs, Segun Fafore, says only candidates that have passed the entry requirement are asked to raise this amount.

"It is part of the training. It is part of the recruitment process. This person will certainly go to the training school. It is just the practical aspect before you go for the four months training programme," he said.

However, none of those we spoke to this paper were called to resume at the bank's training school. Despite excelling at all the pre-recruitment evaluations, they were specifically rejected because they raised less than the N1 million asked by the bank.

Employment bond

Access Bank has been courting controversies for some time now due to some of its recruitment practices. In what is a blatant disregard of the country's labour laws, the bank makes new employees sign bonds that force them to stay in the bank's employ willy-nilly for at least two years.

Access Bank says it does this to protect the "heavy investment" it makes in training its staff. It says due to the quality of training its staff get they are usually poached by both local and international firms.

"The bank invest heavily in building the competence and capacity of its staff to a level of admiration that matches what is available in the global financial community," Mr Fafore says.

"Following market tendencies, it is not surprising that with this kind of investment in its people other institutions, financial and non-financial, within and outside Nigeria encroach on the bank's School of Banking Excellence."

Mr Fafore says the bank designed its employment contract to "stem the tide" of employee poaching.

Alarmed, Lagos lawyer and frontline human rights advocate, Jiti Ogunye, describes the practice as "shady, irresponsible and illegal."

"From employment and banking perspective it was illegal for the bank to compel people who are not employees of the bank to discharge banking duties," he said.

"Having compelled these applicants to go and be scouting for customers for them as a condition of being offered employment, a relationship of implied agency has crystallised between the bank on one hand and those prospective employees. So the bank has made them her agent by sending them out to go and bring customers so the question there is if the bank had made these people her agent how did the bank remunerate them at the end of the day?

It flies in the face of constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens. A bank is expected to be a repository of integrity. This is nothing but obtaining property by false pretence. This is nothing but fraud."

Obituaries and epitaphs

Allegations of malpractices and abuses have dogged recruitment processes and staff training in the Nigerian banking sector. For instance in 2011, a group of Guaranty Trust Bank's entry level trainees were expelled on the last day of training for what the bank described as "[contravening] several basic programme rules that include professional conduct."

But several members of Sapphire, as the class was nicknamed, said the consultant instructor during the training, Tutu Sholeye of Learners and Trainers, traumatised the group with an unending string of vile comments, verbal abuse and attack on their self-esteem.

They told this paper that they were asked to write their obituaries and epitaphs as part of the training regime.

"We were shocked when she told us to write our obituaries and epitaphs. And it didn't end there; whatever you wrote will be used as an excuse to rain more insults on you," said Taye, still visibly angry two years after the experience.

For instance, a trainee who smokes and had indicated to live up to 85 years in his obituary was told by the trainer: "how do you expect to live that long with the worthless life you're living?"

Learners and Trainers website says it focuses on the "attitude training and personal development" rather than focus on "skills and knowledge training."

Ms Sholeye declined to speak with PREMIUM TIMES. She said as a consultant, it was unprofessional for her to speak about what happened during the training.

Peter Ogunnubi, a psychiatrist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, says this style of training is "archaic and barbaric."

"It is a form of mental torture that can lead to post-traumatic and personality disorder." He says this is even more so because the trainees didn't get the job.

Guaranty Trust Bank says this approach to staff training has brought out the best in its employees.

"The curriculum adopted for the training programme which all employees must undertake, has been in use for the same period and you will no doubt agree with me that our Bank has the finest, most professional and knowledgeable human capital in the country today," says Pascal Or, the bank's official in charge of Brand Management.

Regulatory laxity

Those wronged by unfair recruitment may have to look further from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, if they hoped to get succour for the wrong done to them.

CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Ugochukwu Okoroafor, says the CBN cannot act on hearsay.

"Please note that the allegations have not come to our attention with concrete evidence. This is necessary to enable us take action," he said.

"There is nothing the CBN can do on the basis of mere hearsay, other than moral suasion," he added.

Mr Okoroafor, says the CBN prohibits profit and liability targeting by banks and other unethical practices.

"Unfortunately, these are not things you can pick up from financial records when conducting bank examinations. Neither can interviews with Bank Management or staff reveal them."

However Mr Okoroafor said the bank encourages whistleblowers to come with names, dates and evidence of malpractices.

*** The names of the bank informants in this story have been changed to protect their identities. All of them still work with different banks in the country and fear they might be victimised by their employers.

The Quest For Lighter Skin Could Cost You Your Life! All You Need To Know About Skin Whitening

Have you ever wondered how our celebrities just turned white over night. The list is endless. Bleaching is definitely not a new thing. We can authoritatively reveal to you the secret behind these celebs new look. The new bleaching technique is in form of Injection/ Pill. You inject into the blood-stream and then take some pills. Interesting, this injection used for skin lightening, is part of the treatment for HIV and Cancer patients.  The injection/pill gives a much brighter, even toned complexion when taken regularly.

Glutathione is a very good anti-oxidant and very effective whitening if you will take it on a greater dosage. It is an anti-oxidant that cleans the liver, takes off free-radicals and helps the brain too. It is safe for everyone.
It is given to cancer and HIV patients and in other diseases where glutathione is depleted. In HIV, glutathione levels are low and this contributes to immune deficiency as the lymphocytes need normal levels of glutathione to function properly. Glutathione is produced by the body and with age, the levels fall. Low levels or the Lack of glutathione leads to liver failure. It also leads to immune system failure and cells die from oxidative stress.

It was discovered that patients on high dose Glutathione therapy had significant skin lightening as a side effect. Now this has become a fast growing treatment for cosmetic purposes. Injectable Glutathione has become more popular than tablets and are given intravenously 2 – 3 times a week for about 6 months. The digestive tract is bypassed and the maximum concentration reaches the target cells. Results are more dramatic in lighter skinned individuals and it is common to augment results with chemical peels. Glutathione is also known for its anti-aging benefits.

Glutathione acts to lighten skin by inhibiting Tyrosinase the enzyme responsible for the production of the pigment Melanin without destroying the pigment producing cells known as Melanocytes.

The most advisable dosage is 10-20mg/kg BodyWeight.  To use glutathione as an anti-oxidant and for whitening it has to be 20-40mg/kg/BW. Example: 50kg x 20mg = 1000mg. You have to take it with Vitamin C in ascorbic acid form to be able to maximize its whitening effect.

It is 100 percent proven that it really works to whiten skin. For most people, the first 3 months use of gluta is crucial for it is the time where gluta is building the foundation (body chemistry re-alignment) and once built this is only the start for its whitening process. The lightening of skin is gradual (speed is depending on your metabolism and body chemical functioning) this is where you will notice that your skin is shinier and healthier than before. After this process, you will notice that your shade is lighter than before. Glutha whitens the skin by reducing the melanin formation of the epidermis going up to the dermis

There are definitely no side-effects of using gluta, you know why? Because its ability to whiten your skin is already its side-effect. There is also no harm in its prolonged use. Its advisable to take gluta with meal and never take it with liquor or any alcoholic drink.

While taking this, you wont really become sensitive but you have to at least put sunblock lotion or cream to exposed parts of your body and your face.

The active ingredient, Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that naturally occurs in the body and is capable of protecting the skin as well as the cornea, lens and retina of the eye against radiation damage.

However, the use of glutathione in high doses for cosmetic purposes is a non-regulated procedure which could be fatal if not properly used. Glutathione is a drug and must be administered by a doctor or registered nurse. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, liver failure and death.

The quest for lighter skin could cost you your life. This unregulated use of high dose glutathione is relatively new and time will tell what side effects may occur in the long term.

All You Need To Know As Full Cash-Less Policy Begins Oct 2

In addition to other states already in the scheme, the Central Bank of Nigeria will on Wednesday begin the full implementation of its cash-less policy in the Federal Capital Territory, Rivers, Kano, Anambra, Ogun and Abia states. This follows the end of a 3-month moratorium on the charges.
Henceforth, any customer who deposited above N500,000 per day from Wednesday would be charged three per cent, while withdrawals above the limit would attract five per cent charge.
The policy allows the CBN to peg the daily cash withdrawal or deposit for individual accounts at N500,000, while that of corporate accounts is fixed at N3m per day.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on the commencement of the policy in FCT and 5 states, Deputy Governor of the CBN, Operations, Mr. Tunde Lemo, said the imposition of the charges on withdrawals higher than the prescribed limit would ensure an effective implementation of the cash-less policy.

He said, "We will start applying the charges from October 2, which is Wednesday, because the three months moratorium would have expired.

"We are glad to announce that having worked with stakeholders, we have been able to ramp up facilities in Abuja and five other locations, and then, we are set to build up the critical mass requirement for the cash-less policy in those areas."

Lemo said, "For corporate bodies, the threshold is N2m. If you deposit or withdraw any money above the threshold per day, if it is deposit, it will attract three per cent charge, and if it is withdrawal, it attracts five per cent. Those are the charges that are already applicable in the Lagos area that we are now bringing to this location."

10-Year-Old Girl Who Gives Birth After 31-Week Pregnancy [PHOTO]

MEXICANA 10-year-old Mexican girl has given premature birth to a baby boy weighing 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds), Mexican media outlets reported.

The mother was initially admitted to Hospital de la Mujer in Puebla, located about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City, on Oct. 22, suffering from seizures and other medical problems. Surgeons at the hospital delivered the infant by Caesarean section after a 31-week pregnancy.

According to UpFront News, hospital officials have confirmed the birth.

Hospital director Rogelio Gonzalez told The Latin American Herald Tribune that the child is in the neonatal intensive care unit, recovering from pneumonia. The mother, who has since been released, has been breastfeeding the child. For more click on read more

"[She] comes every day with her mother to breastfeed her son every four hours and she is recovering very well from her surgery," Gonzalez said.

The young girl, who is almost 11 years old, is reportedly from the San Francisco Totimehuacan community. According to Gonzalez, the state's minimum age of consent is 12 and abortion is illegal unless the mother was the victim of a sexual assault. As a result, the Puebla state Attorney General's Office has been notified of the birth and is investigating. The agency did not immediately reply to a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

Other girls have given birth at that age or younger. In August 2010, an 11-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by her stepfather gave birth after she was denied an abortion because she was in her fourth month of pregnancy, ksee24.com reported. The youngest mother on record for giving birth is Lina Medina. According to Mid Day, she was five years old when she gave birth to a baby boy in 1939. The father was not positively identified.

In regard to this most recent case, Gonzalez told aciprensa.com he has the "best expectations" for the child's recovery"
