Gone without a trace: Hole emerges inside a home and ‘swallows’ man (PICTURED)

Gone without a trace: Hole emerges inside a home and 'swallows' man (PICTURED)

  • FILE - This undated photo provided by Jeremy Bush shows Jeff Bush. Jeremy Bush heard a loud crash and screaming coming from his brother's room early Thursday, March 1, 2013 in Seffner, Fla. A large sinkhole opened under Jeff's bedroom and he disappeared together with most of the bedroom furniture. Jeremy jumped into the hole and was quickly up to his neck in dirt. Jeff is presumed dead. • SEFFNER, Fla. (AP) — Engineers worked gingerly to find out more about a slowly growing sinkhole that swallowed a Florida man in his bedroom, believing the entire house could eventually succumb to the unstable ground.
Jeff Bush, 37, was in his bedroom Thursday night when the earth opened and took him and everything else in his room. Five other people were in the house but managed to escape unharmed. Bush's brother jumped into the hole to try to help, but he had to be rescued himself by a sheriff's deputy.Engineers were expected at the home to do more tests after sunrise Saturday. They spent the previous day on the property, taking soil samples and running various tests — while acknowledging that the entire lot was dangerous. No one was allowed in the home."I cannot tell you why it has not collapsed yet," Bill Bracken, the owner of an engineering company called to assess the sinkhole, said of the home. He described the earth below as a "very large, very fluid mass."

"This is not your typical sinkhole," said Hillsborough County administrator Mike Merrill. "This is a chasm. For that reason, we're being very deliberate."

Officials delicately addressed another sad reality: Bush was likely dead and the family wanted his body. Merrill, though, said they didn't want to jeopardize any more lives.

"They would like us to go in quickly and locate Mr. Bush," Merrill said.

Two adjacent houses were evacuated and officials were considering further evacuations. Even the media was moved from a lawn across the street to a safer area a few hundred feet away.

"This is a very complex situation," said Hillsborough County Fire Chief Ron Rogers. "It's continuing to evolve and the ground is continuing to collapse."

Sinkholes are so common in Florida that state law requires home insurers to provide coverage against the danger. While some cars, homes and other buildings have been devoured, it's extremely rare for them to swallow a person.

Florida is highly prone to sinkholes because there are caverns below ground of limestone, a porous rock that easily dissolves in water.

"You can almost envision a piece of Swiss cheese," Taylor Yarkosky, a sinkhole expert from Brooksville, Fla., said while gesturing to the ground and the sky blue home where the earth opened in Seffner. "Any house in Florida could be in that same situation."

A sinkhole near Orlando grew to 400 feet across in 1981 and devoured five sports cars, most of two businesses, a three-bedroom house and the deep end of an Olympic-size swimming pool.

More than 500 sinkholes have been reported in Hillsborough County alone since the government started keeping track in 1954, according to the state's environmental agency.

The sinkhole, estimated at 20 feet across and 20 feet deep, caused the home's concrete floor to cave in around 11 p.m. Thursday as everyone in the Tampa-area house was turning in for the night. It gave way with a loud crash that sounded like a car hitting the house and brought Bush's brother running.

Jeremy Bush said he jumped into the hole but couldn't see his brother and had to be rescued himself by a sheriff's deputy who reached out and pulled him to safety as the ground crumbled around him.

"The floor was still giving in and the dirt was still going down, but I didn't care. I wanted to save my brother," Jeremy Bush said through tears Friday in a neighbor's yard. "But I just couldn't do nothing."

He added: "I could swear I heard him hollering my name to help him."

A dresser and the TV set had vanished down the hole, along with most of Bush's bed.

A sheriff's deputy who was the first to respond to a frantic 911 call said when he arrived, he saw Jeremy Bush.

Deputy Douglas Duvall said he reached down as if he was "sticking his hand into the floor" to help Jeremy Bush. Duvall said he didn't see anyone else in the hole.

As he pulled Bush out, "everything was sinking," Duvall said.

Engineers said they may have to demolish the small house, even though from the outside there appeared to be nothing wrong with the four-bedroom, concrete-wall structure, built in 1974.

Jeremy Bush said someone came out to the home a couple of months ago to check for sinkholes and other things, apparently for insurance purposes.

"He said there was nothing wrong with the house. Nothing. And a couple of months later, my brother dies. In a sinkhole," Bush said.

Snakes lover

by Isi Esene

The photo features Emmanuel Tanghco, a zoo owner who loves the company of snakes so much he allows them sleep in his bedroom.

We'll allow you to hazard a guess on what the title of the book he's reading might be… How to cure snake bites, maybe?

Please don't try this at home… or anywhere for that matter!

Opinion: God’s ‘weird’ timing and it’s unending benefits

Opinion: God's 'weird' timing and it's unending benefits

by Oluseun Opadokun

religion

The time of manifestation is determined by the Giver, not the beneficiary, and the rewards of the gifts is a call to humility by the beneficiary, not a call to pride.

Your gift is not a function of where you are now; it's a function of where God is taking you. If I sit on my gift simply because I feel no one notices, I make the grave mistake of thinking that I was supposed to impress anyone in the first place.

God's gifts are for the glory of the giver, not the beneficiary of the gifts, or whoever is observing. The time of manifestation is determined by the Giver, not the beneficiary, and the rewards of the gifts is a call to humility by the beneficiary, not a call to pride.

Joseph tried to hasten the time of his manifestation by asking the king's butler not to forget him, but in 3 days, he forgot Joseph completely because God's time had not yet come. The big lesson here – If one moves ahead of God, s/he may get justice, but then, it may just end there. But if one waits for God's timing, even generations after will remember the good works of God the person's life.

Did you know that Joseph's title died with him? Before him, that title didn't exist, and after him, the title of Prime Minister in Egypt ceased to exist. God still does things like that – he creates vacuums that only His prepared vessels can fill. Have you been tested and approved by God? Can he count on your faithfulness and reliability?

Did you also know that his time of manifestation always elevates his children to the next level, higher than they were before. The butler got his old job back – no salary increase, no enhanced productivity index, just the same old waiting at tables.

The baker got demoted into the grave, hanged to death. Joseph got elevated beyond his wildest expectation because God's time of manifestation had come. Wait for him – he's got a weird but amazing sense of timing. What is yours will never pass you by, as long as you wait on Him and keep your focus on Him.

God is teaching me that – men are like shifting shadows, never consistent. Only God is the Everlasting Father – always a father, no matter how untruthful or faithless His children are.

His nature is not dependent on us; He is who He is in spite of us.

Opinion: How big is your excuse?

Opinion: How big is your excuse?

by Igbokwe Ifeanyichukwu

no-excuses

But then some of the people making these excuses may just be sincerely ignorant. Truth is no matter how good or interesting your excuse may be, it won't pay the bills, no matter how sincere or ignorant you may be, people pay for results, and until you produce the desired results, you may as well decide not to wake up that day.

Until 1875, a thousand and one swimmers had cast their wide reaching gazes on the seemingly endless stretch of the English Channel and wished that they would be the first to swim across it. Everybody else used boats to travel across this massive water body. There was record to be set and but everybody seemed to look only at the often challenging tides and other creatures that lurked dangerously beneath the water body until Mathew Webb approached it with the kind of boldness with which a lion approaches a prey – with carefulness, boldness and determination and became the first man to swim across the English channel without any external support even in the scary face of so much difficulties. It wasn't until he swam across it that everybody began to realize that they could have done it, had they tried. Today even twenty years olds take swimming across this channel as a regular exercise.

Do you hate your status quo? Do you hate the condition life has presented before you? But you are still busy dishing out excuses? Do you only see all the problems and not the springboard to your success?

Hamilton Naki was offered a job to be a gardener in the University of Cape Town.  He had come from the humblest of backgrounds with little or no education to Cape Town. This was apartheid South Africa where the educated black people had not even got a voice not to mention a black male with no education at all. But nothing was going to stop this determined young man with a most amazing self-image and esteem. Soon this illiterate gardener had acquired enough mastery of the happenings around his surroundings that he could assist with the meanest of roles in the laboratory, from cleaning the cages where the animals are kept to anaesthetizing them. He kept observing and learning until he could assist and operate on the animals dissecting them with most expertly dexterity of a brilliant surgeon. Soon he rose to become the principal surgical assistant in the very laboratory where he had previously been employed as a gardener without any certificate, brilliantly undertaking research work that greatly enlarged the frontiers of medical knowledge in the aspect heart surgery and transplant and liver implantation until he could pass his knowledge on to younger doctors. This uneducated man who was employed as a casual gardener in a society that had no place for black people eventually worked so hard that he earned himself an Honorary Master's degree from the University of Cape Town, a feat that previously near impossible and a great reputation.

Scarcely would any man read these lines that does not have better and greater opportunities and privilege than Hamilton Naki. The question is: what have we done with them. What have we done about them?

I have come across some people for want of a better phrase I refer to as excuse professionals. O! I may not be able to go to the gym, today is no so good a day. We just can't bear any comparism with that brand, they are far too ahead. The reason why I am not performing well at my job is 'cause of my boss. I can never get good grades, my teacher is the cause. I can never be that rich no matter how much I tried. I am broke simply because of my husband… Spend just five minutes with some people and you'd be sure to get a hundred excuses why they can't do this or that.

But then some of the people making these excuses may just be sincerely ignorant. Truth is no matter how good or interesting your excuse may be, it won't pay the bills, no matter how sincere or ignorant you may be, people pay for results, and until you produce the desired results, you may as well decide not to wake up that day.

Oh!, you could have an ocean of excuses why you would never be successful, why you may never be rich, why you may not be able to bear any comparism with the man or woman you are competing with but the truth as someone rightly put it is that if we fail to dream, then we would spend our entire lifetime helping other people to build their dreams. Get up take responsibility, go to work and challenge your status. See if things would not change.

Time is gone and is no more existent when the African child will sit idle bemoaning his fate, blaming it on the inability of his government to provide good quality education when he has the world to compete with in a jet age. Past and gone is the time when a graduate from Pakistan would heap a load of regret on his Alma Mata for competition with an American or British over a job in Dubai and losing it, just because he didn't enough to clench it. Until anyone strives consistently for mastery and pays the price, nothing may change.

If you don't like where you are, then move you are not a stone. You have the right to be angry. But make sure you are angry enough to challenge your situation. Then stand up and do something constructive. Continue doing it until something changes. Pay the price for the change and see if things will not change.

Will your salary ever be enough?

Will your salary ever be enough?

by Abdul Fatai .O

salary_in_naira

Do you know that there is great difference between work and job? A job is activities you do to earn a salary while, work is what you engage in with a purpose, what you are born to do in this world.

Financial independence is not about changing job, in case you find yourself in wrong job, the type of work you never dream of doing, financial independence gives you an edge to do what you really care to do and create a foot print to the world at large.

Do you know that there is great difference between work and job? A job is activities you do to earn a salary while, work is what you engage in with a purpose, what you are born to do in this world.

The most important thing is to locate your work and do it with passion, whole heart, mind and soul as some employee did not fall under this reality. Most employee are doing what they do today because of misplacement of priority, we work because of better pays. Remunerations form major determinant of our career decision. An average employee is thinking of pays in their minds, increment in salary will solve their financial difficulties; some employees abandon their families for economic reason to work abroad.

The moment an income is tagged 'SALARY' it will never be enough because your expenditure will always meet your income and at times  surpass  it, more money connotes more financial problem if not judiciously used, as taste, expensive items to buy follows. The bad news is that your salary will not make you rich no matter how it is increase if your mind set is to earn and spend the money.

The good news is that to attain financial independence you need to shift from employee mind set to investor mind set and start minding your own business. To mind your own business you need to discover what you can do to generate income and not to spend your income arbitrarily. You need to learn to live below your income. This is one of the major ways to liberate you from financial slavery. Living below your means simply means saving at least 20% of your gross income at the beginning of the time you have agreed to gain your financial autonomy. It is not easy but there is no success without sacrifices.

As you progress it will be crystal clear to you that fulfilling life is build on a fulfilling investment morally, religiously and financially.

Experts recommend the following sequence 10-20-10-60, the 10% to GOD, 20% for investment (reliable sectors e.g. real state) 10% for capital venturing, 60% is for your sustainability. It is important to note that as income increase you need to reduce your spending.

Have you asked yourself where your previous salary gone to without a trace for years? What are you doing with it right now? Do you want to buy expensive cars as a salary earner? Do you need to work for landlord? Going by the above sequence by expert your living expenses need to be fixed and save the rest.

Dear employees, you need to save before you spend, invest in your financial education and don't rely on mere tips and recommendations from your colleagues. Discover what you are good at doing, don't have that internal discouragement of I don't know what am good at, what can I invest, the simple truth is that human being are gifted with different skills, to have financial freedom you need to invest in that aspect to increase your income that complaining about your salary. Tips to get what you are good at are to focus on activities that give you joy and what you like to do best.

Human beings are born with passion for luxuries; buy your luxuries from your profit not your salary. Living below your means does not connote living a misery life. It is a mere delay of gratifications; don't be carried away by luxuries life of your colleagues. You can pay for that same car after few years of investment.  Effort should be made to convert your salary which is a capital to an investment that grow to an asset, let your asset pay for your luxuries not your salary.

Many die a few year after retirement because their live was wrapped around their salary when they retire they felt useless. Some employee have pin their hope on pension, what if you wake up one day to find out your pension is gone in case you have no plans may be a financial disaster. Never mix up that your salary is your capital not your profit to avoid being trapped into a life time financial struggle.

Clinton: Fashola slams PDP

By OLASUNKANMI AKONI

LAGOS — GOVERNOR Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, described Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as amateurish party, lacking in global development and trend.

Fashola spoke against the backdrop of allegation by Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, that  the visit of former President of the United States of America, USA, at the inauguration of Eko Atlantic City Project, as part of the State government's propaganda.

Speaking at the commemoration of his 2,100 days in office, at Alausa, Fashola said: "I thought I have seen the worst that our political opponent here could produce. But that party seems never to be ashamed of rolling in the mud.

"I accept also that they have demonstrated a lot of amateurish and that is what is on display. They are behind global development and trend. If they follow development, they will know that former President Bill Clinton immediately after he left office launched global initiative to help provide support for environmental sustainability, waste management and others.

"Eko Atlantic City project was one of the projects that won award in New York in 2012. But because the Clinton initiative is a globally recognised organisation, it is not as dysfunctional as the PDP, Clinton was going around the world to see what was going on around the world. That was why Clinton came to Lagos to see our  project. I think that this occasion was too important for such amateurish discussion."
