Atiku Abubakar: Why censoring social media will be a mistake

by Atiku Abubakar

facebook_66976

…young people also must learn to be patient and strategic in the use of their social media. Driving change will need a continuous push and pull on the leadership. If the pressure is not consistent, the leaders young people are seeking to influence will become dense and disregard social media voices as noise, without action.

Social media may yet change governance in Africa

I have recently had to answer many questions from friends and contemporaries, seeking to understand why I decided to join social media and expose myself to potential fire from young Nigerians. This is mostly because people who have known me for a long time know me to be a rather quiet person.

But the reality is that over the last months, I have learned that the positives of social media participation far outweigh the negatives.

Social media is where young people, the bulk of Nigeria's population, gather to share their thoughts, often venting their frustrations with the inefficiencies of the country.

I may not always like what is written about me; indeed some commenters could be very insulting. Our society has always been one where older people expect a lot of respect from younger people, so the relative equality of voice that social media provides may shock newcomers to the platforms.

Overall, social media has allowed me to listen a diverse array of Nigerian voices without filters.

I am going to guess that colleagues in public service may see social media as a threat, and indeed seek to censor social media networks. But I think such an attempt would be a mistake.

Instead of censoring social media, governments need to see them as an opportunity to listen directly to their constituency. The conversations on social media represent a gold mine of data and reference for performance. The reality is that leaders can test opinions using social media, and more importantly, can generate and collate ideas and solutions from their constituency by putting their thoughts out in social media.

Not all ideas on social media are good, and leaders sometimes leaders have to make tough decisions which are unpopular. Indeed that is the point of being a leader, being able to filter through multitudes of voices to make the right decision. However, it is good to see social media as a resource. A 24-hour focus group, which can yield fine ideas for every political leader.

Leadership can only improve where there is an active participation of the led. The active participation of young people on social media, and the continuous interest in how the nation is governed can only lead to improvements in government. I am personally more conscious of my public actions of late, because my presence on social media means I have to give an account of my actions – a responsibility which is self regulated simply because I am aware of the access that the platforms have how provided.

I am now spending most of my free time reading, writing and engaging on social media, and learning. The responses surely is providing feedback which is helping me to make decisions, including my recent scholarship competition.

In the last few months, what I have learned is that this social media rise is happening across Africa. That can only be a good thing. It is very possible that this generation will change the future of Africa because of the availability of more information.

However, young people also must learn to be patient and strategic in the use of their social media. Driving change will need a continuous push and pull on the leadership. If the pressure is not consistent, the leaders young people are seeking to influence will become dense and disregard social media voices as noise, without action. To drive change through social media, the key qualities young people will also need to learn are consistency and doggedness, because politically, that is the only way to survive.

Social media is a powerful organizing tool in perfecting and protecting our democracy moving forward. Together we can ensure dignity for all Nigerians by combatting corruption, creating economic opportunity for our youth and securing our communities. I look forward to continuing my engagement and listening to Nigerians (yes, even the critics!) as we strive for a brighter future.

If you want to buy a TECNO smartphone…

TECNO Phantom A3

After observing the trends with TECNO smartphones in the market, I gained a fairly good grasp of their life cycles. I remember a few weeks after the launch of the TECNO Phantom A, someone said to me that she would wait till it had dropped in price to a certain level. I smiled and responded to her that if she kept that attitude, she would not get a Phantom A to buy. True to my projections, in a few weeks, the Phantom A+ hit the market and the A became extinct. It was almost nowhere to be found, much less at the price that she was looking for. And the newer flagship cost more.

My point? If you see a TECNO smartphone out there that you really like, go and get it now, because TECNO smartphones have short life cycles in the market. Usually, a couple of months after release is all the window that is open for you to buy that model that you like before it disappears off the shelves.

Why?

TECNO is not a large company. Instead of producing huge numbers of each model and risk not selling enough, they produce enough to sell, then release a newer version that usually has some minor improvements. It is a plan that works well if you don't have the financial muscles of the big players. Their smartphones keep getting better in measured steps, and they keep selling out.

If you want a TECNO smartphone, just go buy it. The waiting game does not work here.

Relationship with Christ

In My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers wrote:
"There is only one relationship that matters, and that is your personal relationship to a personal Redeemer and Lord. Let everything else go, but maintain that at all costs, and God will fulfill His purpose through your life. . . . Always remain alert to the fact that where one man has gone back is exactly where anyone may go back . . . Kept by the power of God - this is the only safety."

The Human Brain Is Too Weak for Gossip

William Shakespeare, speaking through one of his characters in The Comedy of Errors, articulated a very important psychological insight: "Ill deeds are doubled with an evil word." Words act as multipliers — they're powerful. And if the Bard had wanted to give management advice, he'd certainly have warned us about the pernicious impacts of gossip in the workplace.

Gossip is evaluative talk among familiars about a third party who is not present. Surely it is a bit of stretch to characterize gossip as "evil." Yet a number of the world's most prominent religions and philosophies explicitly have dissuaded their adherents from engaging in the activity — sometimes even characterizing it as sinful. In Leviticus, one finds, "Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people."

Similar remarks are found the Koran. Confucius, in The Analects, is reported to have said, "To engage in gossip and spreading of rumors is to abandon virtue." The same sentiment appears in the writings of ancient Stoic philosophers and in modern-day self-help books. The thought is everywhere — and for good reason.

The old philosophers and sages understood instinctively what contemporary psychology is more formally demonstrating:  our beliefs are not always established and maintained in the most rational ways.   To begin with, when we encounter new information, there is good evidence that our mind's default mode is first to assume it is true.   Only when the receiver has sufficient motivation and time to reflect on the information, will it potentially be tagged in the memory as false.  Until then it's stored as if it were true. With gossip, that's clearly dangerous.

Gossip becomes even more worrisome when one starts to appreciate other ways in which our mind is fallible. For instance, we sometimes mistake the source of our memories and the context in which they were encoded.

I recently told a class about my vivid recollection of the day the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. I vividly remember my elementary school gym teacher gently breaking the news to my fellow six-year-old classmates and me. After I recounted this story, one student commented that I looked rather old for my age. It turns out that the Challenger exploded in 1986 when I was twelve years old and in middle school. (It took a bit of Googling to convince me that my memory was mistaken.) You could just as easily "remember" something you overheard from the office's arch-gossiper as coming from a truly credible source.

The multiplying effect of gossip gets more troubling when beliefs formed through it shape subsequent perceptions. Our minds attend selectively to information that supports already existing beliefs, and to discount information that goes against our beliefs. That phenomenon — confirmation bias — has been documented in countless psychological studies. (Mind you, anyone who's witnessed discussions around contentious political issues — e.g., gun control or Obamacare — should have more than enough data to conclude that people selectively choose their "facts.") By implanting beliefs, therefore, gossip can dangerously shape subsequent perceptions.

Gossip may provide momentary entertainment to some people. That part is clear. What is less apparent to them, I suspect, is that it also can alter their minds and hence their realities. Gossip can blow up start-ups and corrode morale in large companies. It is, as Shakespeare might say, a most calamitous evil.

Most of the complaints border around the new look and a few say they have performance issues as well.

In any case, if you want to go back to the last version before the current update, use the link below that corresponds with your device's OS to install the previous version of BBM.

BBM for OS 5

BBM for OS 6
