Cervical Cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women. It is cancer that starts in cervix, the mouth of uterus. Women who are above 35 years of age, women who have sex at an immature age, women who have had many sex partners or whose partner has have many sexual contacts are at greater risk. According to the report of WHO ( World Health Organisation) and ICO (Information Center On) HPV and Cervical Cancer every day at an average 200 women are dying and 250 cases are detected of it.
Caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), back pain, bone fractures, heavy bleeding from vagina, leaking of urine, loss of appetite, pelvic pain are few of its symptoms. A vaccine to prevent cervical cancer is now available which is recommended to every girl before entering her sexual life. In 2006 US Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine called Gardasil which prevents infection against two types HPV that cause cervical cancer. It bears a total cost of 12 thousand rupees. Dr. Yash Bala, one of the best gynecologists of Chandigarh said," It's really a sorry state of affair that people are unaware of cervical cancer and relates it to neck. The people are ready to spend lacs on the marriage of their daughter but are reluctant to spend a small amount to save them from this deadly disease."
This cancer is 100% curable only if it's diagnosed at a very early stage. This precancerous condition can be detected by Pap Smears and it is very important for women to get regular Pap smear. Dr. Yash Bala asked for a helping hand from media towards this great cause. "We cannot go and tell each and everybody to go for vaccination or Pap smear. It's Media that can alarm people and come forward to eradicate the very roots of this disease". Let's join hands to show it the exit.
