Jonathan must free himself from PDP captivity – Braithwaite
The Presidential candidate for the National Advance Party, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to free himself from the captivity of the Peoples Democratic Party in order to be able to govern the country well.
Braithwaite spoke at a news conference in Lagos on Tuesday in his capacity as the Convener of the National Action Coalition for Democratic Forces.
He said, "We call on Dr. Jonathan to seriously begin to see himself as not a captive of his party, the PDP. His administration has been running government of exclusion and if he continues to run a government of exclusion, he will have himself to blame for the consequence."
Braithwaite also said the offer by the international community, especially the United States, to help Nigeria tackle the Boko Haram insurgency could be likened to a Greek Gift.
The lawyer said, "The oil exploration that has attracted international community for their economic interests will easily bring international interference that will exacerbate our national problem. We will warn the international community to leave us. The issue is corruption, which they fuel themselves."
He said the Boko Haram problem was deeper than religion, warning religious leaders not to be deceived into believing it was religious.
He said Boko Haram was a product of bitter politics; bad governance; corruption, which characterise the Nigerian system.
He said, "The problem of Boko Haram goes deeper than religion. So we want to sound a note of warning to the religious leaders not to allow themselves to look at the sect as a religious issue which has started the dichotomy between the two major religions in Nigeria."
"In Nigeria we live side by side regardless of our religion. I think the religious dimension is a diversion."
