We insist: Fashola’s government defends ban on press interviews

We insist: Fashola's government defends ban on press interviews

by NAN

fashola tribute

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday defended the ban on its officials not to grant spontaneous press interviews, saying the ban did not mean it was running a secret government.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Aderemi Ibirogba, made the clarification on Tuesday, in Ikeja, at a news conference organised to mark Gov. Raji Fashola's sixth year in office.

Mr. Ibirogba explained that the government had nothing to hide, adding that the measure was to ensure proper structuring of the government's information flow.

The measure, which also restricts commissioners from granting on-the-spot interviews, had attracted criticisms from civil society groups.

One of the groups, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, argued that it undermined freedom of information.

According to Mr. Ibirogba, the Fashola administration has nothing to hide by barring officials from granting spontaneous interviews.

"In fact, the government has always ensured government information is accessible to everyone; what we have done is to ensure that people access the information at the right source.

"We don`t want a situation where somebody, who might not even be a civil servant, grants interviews to journalists on government's plans and programmes.

"In order that the public gets accurate information at all times, journalists demanding interviews should come directly to the Ministry of Information for whatever they want to find out," he said.

He said, however, that the ban did not preclude commissioners and other senior government officials from speaking with the press because they had other platforms to brief the press.

Mr. Ibirogba said that the ministry had invigorated all the agencies and organisations under it to ensure effective management of government information.

EXPOSED! Northern Governors Set To Dump Jonathan & PDP

EXPOSED! Northern Governors Set To Dump Jonathan & PDP

The political atmosphere in Nigeria is highly combustible at the moment and OluFamous.Com has gathered from top political players in Abuja that a powerful tsunami is coming. There is going to be so many casualties in the "explosion" but President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP will most likely be the losers.
My source, an insider, said they are now ready to ensure that PDP crumbles...
In their reaction to the suspension on Monday of Governor Rotimi Amaechi, northern governors on the PDP platform were said to have made "serious" contacts and those of them who are bold enough have decided that the best option is to see to the collapse of the PDP as soon as possible.

My source said the Norther Governors who are ready to move and join the opposition are well aware that it was President Goodluck Jonathan that gave the orders for Amaechi's suspension and information available to them was that some of them will soon be suspended and ridiculed too.
"We saw this coming and we have begun consultations. This is politics; there are NWC members who are with us. We built this party from the scratch and we cannot be shoved aside.

"It is either they allow true democracy to prevail or we seek our political fortunes elsewhere. Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), there are other platforms available today," a Governor's aide told Punch.

"My boss and his colleagues are also happy that Nigerians at home and abroad see what is happening. No matter how much the PDP wants to conceal it, everybody knows that Amaechi is being victimised for daring to stand for and win the governors' forum election.

"Amaechi's suspension is meant to scare those who support him. Northern governors are aware that his problem stems from his perceived support for the emergence of a northern candidate for the 2015 elections," the governor aide stressed.

Already, a PDP top man confided in OluFamous.Com that there is a big split in the National Working Committee of the party over the hurried suspension of Amaechi.

PDP Is Collapsing, Founding Fathers Must Speak Up ––Atiku

PDP Is Collapsing, Founding Fathers Must Speak Up ––Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party to come together to save the party from crises capable of leading to avoidable implosion.

The former Vice President said as one of the founding fathers of the party, he had a duty to call on other founding members to rise to the occasion and caution "the forces that are bent on tearing the party apart and providing the ammunition for self destruction."

In a statement in Abuja on Monday, Atiku said he was particularly disturbed by the worsening polarisation of the party and internal divisions which might weaken the party structures at the state and deepen the crisis between the governors and the President.

He lamented the failure of the National Executive Council to meet in line with the provisions of the party's constitution and inability of the "Board of Trustees to rise to the occasion of arresting this ugly development."

Jonathan Gives Order For Amaechi's Impeachment Immediately

Jonathan Gives Order For Amaechi's Impeachment Immediately

The next phase of the total war declared against Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, by the Presidency is for him to be impeached unconstitutional "immediately" by just 5 members of the of the House of Assembly which is populated by over 20 members.
The five House members are known to be loyal to President Goodluck Jonathan's camp in Rivers State, that is headed by the Minister of State for Education, Amaechi's former boy, Nyesom Wike.
See details of the unfolding wicked plan...
According to Sahara Reports, President Jonathan's political witch-hunt of Rivers State governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has reached a dramatic stage, with the Presidency approving and funding a plan to impeach the governor with the help of only five state lawmakers.

A source within the Presidency told SaharaReporters that President Jonathan's men have given the go-ahead to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police Mbu Joseph Mbu, Minister of State for Education, Nyeson Wike, and former member of the House of Representatives, Austin Okpara, to recruit five willing members of the state assembly to declare Amaechi impeached before this week runs out.

"As soon as the impeachment is carried out, the CP (Commissioner of Police) Mbu, has been directed to arrest Amaechi and transfer him to Abuja where he will be tried," said our authoritative source.

A senior aide to Mr. Amaechi told SaharaReporters that the governor had heard that President Jonathan had urged his closest associates to effect his rival's impeachment as soon as possible.

The feud between President Jonathan and Amaechi has escalated ever since the latter won the chairmanship of the Nigeria Governors Forum, defeating Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State who was backed by the president. The root of the feud lies in Amaechi's rumored hostility to Jonathan's plan to run for a second term in office come 2015.
Since the quarrel between the two politicians blew into the open, Jonathan has used federal might to move against the governor. Acting on presidential order, the Aviation Minister grounded a jet used by Amaechi on the excuse that its registration was irregular.

On Monday, the National Working Committee of the People's Democratic Party  suspended Amaechi from the party without giving him a chance to defend himself.

However, Jonathan's immediate interest is to throw Amaechi out of office by using five willing members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Our source at the Presidency disclosed that "The matter is giving Mr. President sleepless nights and he has decided to remove Amaechi immediately."

MY BROTHER, DON'T MARRY A WOMAN ANXIOUS TO GET MARRIED WRITTEN BY JEROME YAOVI ONIPEDE. POSTED IN GET CAPTIVATED

My dear Brother, whoever you may be and where ever you are,

Please don't get married to a woman that is anxious to get Married, because despite the fact that she may have loved to get married at some point, and with the intention of been happily married, she wants to be married now, not for the purpose of marriage, but to deal with unresolved issues in her life at the moment like:

1) Her clock is ticking, and she just has to do it now
2) All her friends are married (which is usually not true), and so she has to be married too
3) Pressure from Family Members about her getting married will stop
4) She will move out of her father's house where she is ashamed to be till now
5) She is very lonely
6) etc, etc

A woman like this is not FIT for marriage emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and mentally. She is FULL OF ANXIETY at the moment, and can't chose you for love, but as a MEANS of solving Personal Conflicts in her life. Both of you may eventually find out that you were never meant to be together, but just a case of "WHAT ANXIETY HAS JOINED TOGETHER".

She needs to find PEACE through Counseling. If you really love her, encourage her to go for Counseling, and FIND PEACE IN GOD, HERSELF, and with HER WORLD, before she considers Marriage again.

Akpabio creates NGF faction, after losing vote

Akpabio creates NGF faction, after losing vote

Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom State governor: very anti-Amaechi

Akwa Ibom governor,Godswill Akpabio, demonstrating poor sportsmanship, is determined to split Nigeria Governors Forum, after his candidate, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau state stunningly lost to incumbent chairman, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state on Friday in Abuja.

Akpabio says that Jonah Jang is his faction's chairman of Governors Forum, though Jang lost the open-secret election to Amaechi by three votes.

After Amaechi's re-election was announced by Mr Asishana Bayo Okauru, Director-General of the forum`s Secretariat, Akpabio led the governors in his camp out of the secretariat, to announce that Jang 'won'. Akpabio also leads the PDP Governors Forum, hurriedly set up, with inspiration from Jonathan's presidency to break the solidarity of the 36 state governors under NGF and Amaechi's leadership.

Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom State governor: very anti-Amaechi

Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom State governor: very anti-Amaechi

Okauru said "Amaechi won the transparent election with 19 votes while Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau, who contested the position with him, got 16 votes.

" I served as Returning Officer and after counting the votes cast by all governors here, except that of Yobe, the forum`s incumbent Chairman, Gov. Amaechi of Rivers emerged winner. He got 19 votes against Gov Jonah Jang of Plateau who got 16 votes,'' Okauru said.

He added that Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo and his Zamfara counterpart, Abdulazeez Yari, contested the Vice Chairmanship position of the forum.

Mimiko, he said, withdrew from the contest shortly before the commencement of voting and yielded his position to his Zamfara state counterpart, who now returned unopposed.

However, those in the camp of Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom protested the reemergence of Amaechi as the forum`s chairman.

Akpabio, who is the Chairman of the Peoples` Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDPGF), said the result of the election was not valid.

He held that 18 governors had endorsed Jang as their candidate and wondered how Amaechi could have won the election.

He posited that Amaechi was not supposed to have presided over the election, adding that he should have stepped down before the election.

Akpabio maintained that his camp would only recognise Jang as the NGF's chairman while Mimiko of Ondo would serve as its vice chairman.

Governors of Kogi, Bauchi, Delta, Enugu, Plateau, Cross River, Anambra and Ebonyi, among others, were at Akpabio's briefing.

The NGF had so far had five governors as chairmen since inception.

Its pioneer chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, then the governor of Nasarawa State, held the position from 1999 to 2004.

Chief Victor Attah, then governor of Akwa Ibom, succeeded him and was there for two years from 2004 to 2006 when the then governor of Edo, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, replaced him.

Whereas Igbinedion was in office until 2007, his successor, Sen. Bukola Saraki, then governor of Kwara, led the forum from 2007 to 2011.

The exit of Bukola from the forum paved the way for the election of the current chairman, Amaechi, since 2011.

Under its first three chairmen, Adamu, Attah and Igbinedion, the forum was largely regarded as a platform where the governors came together to rub minds and relax.

However, under Saraki, it began to take on more serious issues. The forum helped the governors to win a share of the Excess Crude Account.

The NGF is an umbrella body of the 36 governors in the federation irrespective of party affiliation.

Senator to Asari-Dokubo: stop threatening Nigeria’s unity

Senator to Asari-Dokubo: stop threatening Nigeria's unity

The senator representing Osun East in the National Assembly, Christopher Babajide Omoworare, has warned the leader of the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, as well as others like him, to stop threatening the nation's peace and unity because of President Goodluck Jonathan's second term ambition in 2015.

Addressing reporters in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the lawmaker representing what is called the "Ife-Ijesha Zone" on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), noted that people are better informed now than they were during the 2011 presidential election.

According to him, Jonathan cannot secure five per cent of the total votes of Nigerians, considering the present state of the nation.

Omoworare said: "Asari-Dokubo and his colleagues should stop their threats. Nothing will happen if Jonathan is voted out. He is not bigger than Nigeria. What we are saying is that we should allow whoever has the competence, depth and understanding of the nation's fundamental challenges to lead us. Governance is not about good luck; it is about hard work and intelligence.

"(Former President Olusegun) Obasanjo and Jonathan tactically avoided presidential debates to tell the nation how much they knew about the nation and its challenges. We want someone who will convince us he has the capacity to lead us.

"Jonathan should pack his bag and baggage and leave. He has done enough for his village with the church and university he built for them. He should stop hounding perceived enemies. This is democracy. Freedom of association, of speech and the people's fundamental rights must be respected. This is not a military era. People should be allowed to flourish.

"Coercion can no longer work. People are more determined than ever before not to be intimidated. When other political parties are forging alliances to help the nation out of the woods, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is going round the country solving internal crises. Today, the PDP is bad news."

U.S. finally removes Nigeria from Obama’s itinerary

U.S. finally removes Nigeria from Obama's itinerary

OBAMAA DIRECTIVE from the White House has cancelled outright the visit of United States' (U.S.) President, Barack Obama, to Nigeria on his second trip to the continent, informed U.S. sources have confirmed.

While some middle level State Department officials had already intimated some U.S.-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on plans to include Nigeria on the U.S. President's stops in Africa starting from next month, senior officials of the same department have hinted the Nigerian Government of the possibility of the nation's exclusion due to some pressing, immediate and distant concerns of their government.

Apart from the Baga incident, which is seen as the immediate cause of the snub, it was disclosed that White House officials were also inundated with facts on how the President Goodluck Jonathan administration has abandoned the anti-corruption fight, especially by pardoning the former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Other instances the White House officials are said to be concerned about on matters of corruption include the controversial reports it had received regarding two important Federal Government ministries, the Petroleum Resources and Aviation.

The U.S. sources added that before last Monday's announcement on the issue, the Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S., Prof. Ade Adefuye, was invited to the State Department to be formally updated on the situation at a meeting with several U.S. officials, led by the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Donald Yamamoto.

At the meeting, the American officials presented the Nigerian envoy with satellite photographs of the alleged Baga massacre, noting among other things that it made Nigeria's inclusion in Obama's visit very difficult.

Indeed, satellite pictures revealing damage to households in Baga had been made public by the Human Rights Watch earlier, but it was not immediately clear if the same pictures were the ones presented to the Nigerian envoy at the May 17 meeting the officials held with him.

However, it was learnt that Adefuye disputed the credibility of the photos since it claimed to be depicting more houses in Baga than actually existed. Also, there were persistent questions on the fact that the satellite-captured photos could not have revealed who was responsible for the damage in Baga.

Meanwhile, a U.S.-based Nigerian group, the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans (CANAN) had also made a statement earlier in the week that "President Obama's visit would have benefitted the Nigerian people more than the Nigerian Government."

CANAN noted that Obama went to Cairo "at a time dictators were all over the Middle East, and his critical speech provoked a major and productive societal revival, which democratic fervour is still very much in play in the Middle-East."

It added: "A visit by President Obama, based on the widespread admiration he enjoys in Nigeria, would have served to mobilise the Nigerian people and push the country forward towards fulfilling its potential, the same fact for which the U.S. Government itself had described the country as its African anchor."

However, State Department officials insisted that Nigeria's exclusion from the presidential and high-level contact at this time had already been taken by the White House. In fact, after the meeting with Adefuye on May 17, the Secretary of State, John Kerry, issued a public statement that for the first time, the U.S. had in its custody "credible allegations" against the Nigerian security forces in the implementation of the emergency rule ordered by President Jonathan.

It noted: "We are also deeply concerned by credible allegations that Nigerian security forces are committing gross human rights violations, which, in turn, only escalate the violence and fuel extremism.

"The United States condemns Boko Haram's campaign of terror in the strongest terms. We urge Nigeria's security forces to apply disciplined use of force in all operations, protect civilians in any security response, and respect human rights and the rule of law."

According to sources, the groundwork to exclude Nigeria from the presidential visit to Africa, which was announced by the White House on May 20, was perfected after that announcement.

Nevertheless, it is believed that Adefuye was still making last ditch effort to convince the White House on the need for a rethink. Last year, the Secretary of State had left out Nigeria on his stops on an African tour, until Adefuye's efforts caused a change of plans to include a stop in Abuja.

Airtel introduces single recharge system for voice, data

One of Nigeria's leading telecommunications operator, Airtel Nigeria, has introduced a dual-purpose single recharge card for both voice and data services on the network that will allow customers to recharge for both services with only one recharge card.

The Single Recharge Option, another first in the industry by Airtel, is available in both physical and electronic recharge formats. The physical recharge card comes in N100, N500 and N5000 denominations, while the electronic pin (paper) option are available in denominations of N100, N200, N500, N1000, N2000 and N5000.

For the Single Recharge, the old process of recharge for the Airtel voice service still suffices as customers are to dial *126* followed by the Recharge PIN and then #. However, to subscribe for data service on the same recharge card, customers will need to dial *143* followed by Recharge PIN and #.
The Single Recharge Option also attracts applicable bonus rates for data subscription depending on the amount of airtime purchased.

When customers load between N100 and N500, they will enjoy 60% data bonus while subscription of N1, 000 to N5, 000 attracts for 30 percent data bonus.

Speaking on latest innovation, the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director, Airtel Nigeria, Deepak Srivastava, said the latest recharge option further buttresses the company's commitment to continually offer Nigerians innovative products tailored to provide them a whole world of value and convenience.

He pledged Airtel relentless drive to deliver fresh and cutting-edge telecoms technology so to ensure that its customers continue to enjoy first-rate products and services, adding that Single Recharge is another great reason to be on the Airtel network, especially coming at a time when Mobile Number Portability (MNP) allows customers to move over to Airtel for the conveniences that it offers its customers.

"The Airtel Single Recharge is simply a double victory for our customers because we have single-handedly, eliminated the multiple processes of recharging or subscribing for voice and data services separately, by merging the two procedures to produce a single and seamless recharge process for both services using a single step. This is not only unique but revolutionary, and can only come from a network that has got Nigerians proudly covered", he said.

The Airtel Single Recharge, which is for both prepaid and postpaid customers, also provides additional advantage for data customers as it totally eliminates the process of subscribing for data using USSD or SMS codes.

Study shows pregnant women who eat less fish have children with lower IQs (READ)

Study shows pregnant women who eat less fish have children with lower IQs (READ)

eiorioeri

Scientists are finding that there is a relationship between what a mother eats and her child's IQ.  Using women in Britain for the study, researchers concluded that women who eat less fish had kids with lower IQs than those whose mothers ate plenty of fish.

Study leader, Margaret Rayman, of the University of Surrey worked with colleagues at the University of Bristol to study mothers and children and their urine samples.  In the samples, they were seeking iodine concentration, which tells them how much fish the mother ate during pregnancy.

After the first leg of the study, the researchers checked the IQs of children at age 8 and reading ability at age 9.  That's when it was determined that two thirds of pregnant women were iodine deficient.

Mothers with the lowest levels of iodine had kids with the lowest IQs.

"Our results show the importance of adequate iodine status during early gestation and emphasize the risk that iodine deficiency could pose to the developing infant, even in a country classified as only mildly iodine deficient," the researchers concluded. "Iodine deficiency in pregnant women in Britain should be treated as an important public health issue that needs attention."

While the study showed that the women who ate fish during pregnancy positively affected the IQ of their children, there is still a risk when women who are pregnant eat fish and seafood. Fish is commonly the cause of many allergies and also the cause of food poisoning when it is not correctly stored and cooked. Caution must be exercised when pregnant women consume fish and other seafood.

Watch it: Study shows diet soda is as bad as crack cocaine for your teeth

Watch it: Study shows diet soda is as bad as crack cocaine for your teeth

The woman in the study said she started drinking diet soda because she was concerned about gaining weight. But as a result of her soda consumption — and failing to visit the dentist — she lost all her teeth.

The woman in the study said she started drinking diet soda because she was concerned about gaining weight. But as a result of her soda consumption — and failing to visit the dentist — she lost all her teeth.

Too much Diet Coke may give you "coke mouth."

Drinking large quantities of diet soda can rot your teeth just like doing methamphetamine or crack cocaine does, according to a new study.

The report, which was recently published in the journal General Dentistry, found that a woman in her 30s who drank two liters of diet soda every day for three to five years had eroded teeth similar to those of a 29-year-old meth addict and a 51-year-old longtime crack user.

"You look at it side-to-side with 'meth mouth' or 'coke mouth,' it is startling to see the intensity and extent of damage more or less the same," said Dr. Mohamed Bassiouny, a professor of restorative dentistry at the Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, told HealthDay.

Diet and regular soda are highly acidic, like methamphetamine and crack cocaine. Paired with poor dental hygiene, the citric and phosphoric acid in soda can lead to substantial damage and decay, Bassiouny said.

The woman in the study admitted she had not been to the dentist in years. Many of the her teeth were eroded, discolored and could not be saved. The 29-year-old in the study reported using methamphetamine for three years, and also consumed two or three cans of regular soda daily. The 51-year-old said he had been doing crack for 18 years. The three study participants needed all of their teeth extracted.

The American Beverage Association, which represents soft drink manufacturers, told HealthDay in a statement that the study shouldn't be seen as a reason to stop drinking all diet soda.

"The woman referenced in this article did not receive dental health services for more than 20 years — two-thirds of her life," the organization said. "To single out diet soda consumption as the unique factor in her tooth decay and erosion — and to compare it to that from illicit drug use — is irresponsible."

Dr. Eugene Antenucci, spokesman for the Academy of General Dentistry, said people are "better off" if they don't drink soda, but he doesn't think people need to go to the extreme of never drinking soda again — they should just be aware that the beverage is highly acidic.

"Knowing that, you limit it and understand that you need to clean your mouth afterward," he told HealthDay. "Even simple water will wash away the acidity. And everyone should brush twice a day, if not more often.

5 myths about curing common injuries (you probably believe)

5 myths about curing common injuries (you probably believe)

by Daniel Nest

NCAA Football: Michigan State at Central Michigan

Many poisons are acidic or alkaline in nature, so although it would have been better not to swallow poison in the first place, bringing it back up via the esophagus can just burn your throat out.

In the middle of any kind of health emergency, large or small, you'll immediately be surrounded by friends shouting tips about how to handle it. When you get all of this conflicting advice ("He's choking! Kick him in the balls!"), you wonder if their medical knowledge is coming from actual science, old wives' tales they heard from their grandma, or something they saw in a comic book. Don't bother asking — they don't know, either.

So, from time to time we like to go look up the actual medical advice from experts to find all of the ways conventional wisdom gets these things disastrously wrong.

5. Don't Tilt Your Head Back to Stop a Nosebleed

If you were the same stereotypical nerd that we were in high school, then you know the pain of occasional nosebleeds as intimately as wedgie rash. And whether these sudden gouts of blood are due to a dodgeball to the face or random chance, everyone instinctively does the same thing: squeeze the nostrils shut and tilt their head back.

It makes sense, considering that the first order of business is to keep blood from running all over your one good T-shirt. Sure, bloodstains look badass when they're new, but when they dry, they just look like you dribbled brown gravy all over yourself.

But Actually …

Not only does holding your head back not do anything to actually stop the nosebleed, but it grants the blood free access to flow down your throat, which is actually a worse place for it to be than on your Dragon Ball Z shirt. Sure, you might figure that blood is supposed to be inside you anyway, so it can't do any more harm down there, but actually, this technique can result in choking, or, if the blood travels further down, stomach irritation and vomiting. All things considered, you'll only wind up grossing everyone out even more.

What Can You Do Instead?

The consensus among doctors is that you should sit down, pinch your nose, and lean forward. Leaning forward will help you avoid swallowing your blood, pinching your nose will prevent the blood from escaping it, and sitting down will help you not be standing around like a jackass while waiting for the bleeding to stop. Most nosebleeds will stop by themselves within 10 minutes, so you can usually ride them out in this manner without making your house look like the finale of Django Unchained.

4. If Poisoned, Don't Induce Vomiting (Unless a Doctor Says So)

So your friend got distracted on beer night and accidentally drank a glass of paint thinner. It's the kind of comical situation that we who write for comedy sites find ourselves in every day. But unfortunately, unlike in Wile E. Coyote cartoons, a case of poisoning rarely results in your face turning green and then you jumping through a wall. Most of us probably know what to do about it, though — after all, it's not rocket science. You have to get the poison out. Two fingers down the throat will bring that stuff right back up again. If it's good enough for James Bond, it's good enough for us.

But Actually …

If some substance is doing damage to the inside of your friend's body, then, like chasing an angry raccoon out of your house via the back door, it's going to do more damage on its way out. Many poisons are acidic or alkaline in nature, so although it would have been better not to swallow poison in the first place, bringing it back up via the esophagus can just burn your throat out.
Remember that your stomach is full of acid anyway — it might be able to deal with an acidic substance. Sitting in a pool of acid is literally its job. But anyone who has had to contend with heartburn knows that the throat doesn't deal with it so well. Your lungs, if you should happen to gag while blowing volatile acidic chunks, even less so.

What Can You Do Instead?

Your problem is that there is no universal first-aid response for "poisoning" because there are a million different substances out there that all wreak havoc on your insides in different ways. You have to call for help — and while you wait, you can make sure your friend doesn't have any poison left in his mouth. If he stops breathing, do CPR. But that's it, until you get instructions from somebody smarter than you.

Now, if you're lucky, you know what your friend drank and it came in a bottle with instructions on the back that tell you what to do if you manage to put it inside your dumb ass. But in any case, don't mess around with whatever folksy remedy your grandmother told you about, involving vomit or anything else. Call poison control, because the only antidote that can help you comes with the letters "M.D." on its business card.

3. A Cold Shower Does Nothing to Speed Sobriety

We were all young once, and some of us still are, so most of us know the joys of waking up drunk after a night of partying. It's usually a week after we swore to never do that again. So what happens if you have things to do and people to meet, but you still need to hold onto the walls to stop the room from spinning? Conventional wisdom says that you jump into a cold shower to scare your body sober.

But Actually …

It turns out your shower water does not possess any magical healing properties. It does, however, have the ability to give you hypothermia when you're drunk.

As we've mentioned in the past, despite what cute cartoons about droopy-eyed brandy-carrying Saint Bernards may lead you to believe, alcohol does not warm you up. In fact, alcohol lowers your overall body temperature, so you're making things a lot worse when you add cold water to the equation. "Well, better cold than drunk," you say defiantly, because you like to argue with computer screens while reading articles on the Internet. That's the thing, though: Cold water doesn't do shit to cancel the effects of alcohol. Worse than that, in extreme cases, the shock of cold water may even knock a drunk person unconscious. So unless your weekend plans include lying naked in a pool of icy water, we strongly advise you to stay away from cold showers.

What Can You Do Instead?

Although there are a million different folk cures for drunkenness, from coffee to Berocca to a round of slaps to the face, the truth is that the only true way to sober up is to wait it out while your punished, weeping liver churns through the alcohol. You could of course try drinking in moderation in the first place, but how in the hell will you tolerate being around your drunk friends then?

2. Don't Try to Fight a Burn With Something Cold

If you've ever fried up some bacon and just tried to grab it out of the pan with your bare hands because the desire to eat it momentarily overpowered your ability to think thoughts, then you probably know what a burn feels like. And at that point, instinct kicks in: cold defeats hot, therefore we must apply something cold to the burn. You grab some ice or a bag of frozen peas to soothe the pain, figuring why else would the Ice Amulet be so effective against Fire Ogres in Orcs Must Die, if not to teach us proper medical treatment for burns?
But Actually …

You might temporarily make the pain go away, but putting ice on a burn is sort of like stitching a wound with a nail gun — you're just inflicting more damage. In one study on lab rats, researchers compared different remedies for burns, including a 10-minute application of ice cubes to the burn. They concluded that the ice cube treatment resulted in "the most severe damage," which careful readers will notice is not at all how remedies are supposed to work.

In another study, researchers gave 24 healthy volunteers first-degree burns and then measured how they responded to what was a lab equivalent of ice-cooling a burn. The study has proven that the line between "researcher" and "sadistic madman" is often nonexistent, and that ice-cooling a burn did not result in less pain and inflammation when compared to the "doing nothing at all" treatment.
The thing is that ice can cause frostbite, which in itself is a form of burn and can only worsen the injury. Have you ever responded to a sudden cold breeze by lighting yourself on fire? It's kind of the same logic.

What Can You Do Instead?

If you want immediate cooling, you can run some tap water over the burn to soothe the pain. Covering the burn with a sterile gauze bandage prevents air from getting to it, which will help further reduce the pain. Painkillers are also good for reducing pain, but hopefully you didn't need a comedy website to bring you such groundbreaking insights.

1. Urinating on a Jellyfish Sting Just Increases the Pain

At some point in humanity's long history of terrible ideas, somebody got stung by a jellyfish and somebody else decided to unzip their pants and try to piss it better. The remedy was popularized in that Friends episode where Chandler had to pee on Monica's sting, and it's entered our mythology as the right thing to do because we are the kind of society that gets its medical advice from 1990s sitcoms. And yes, we're aware that we are a pop culture comedy site and we're making that joke immediately before doling out medical advice.

But Actually …

If you're stung by a jellyfish and someone starts spraying their pee all over it, you're going to wind up in more pain than you were before. You see, jellyfish stinging cells are actually activated by fresh water. That's their cue to start pumping venom into your flesh. Surprise: Your urine is mostly fresh water. If it's not, you have far bigger problems than jellyfish stings to worry about.

So you no doubt think, as Chandler did, that you're heroically coming to a woman's rescue by bucking up and doing what needs to be done, gross as that may be. But if Friends were realistic, she'd be shrieking in pain as though he was pissing acid. That'd be the rest of the episode: Monica lying in a puddle of piss, howling in pain, and begging him to kill her for 20 straight minutes until they just cut to commercial.

what Can You Do Instead?
The most important thing is to try to get rid of the stinging cells. You can try to scrape these away with something (like a credit card). Afterward you can pour some salt water on the sting. Salt water, unlike urine, deactivates the stinging cells and eases the pain. As for the urine myth, professionals concede that, after the stingers have been removed, "warm urine might soothe the sting based on its warmth alone." You know what else can do that? Literally anything else in the world that happens to be warm.

Immorality Is Trending

Immorality Is Trending

Gay activists love to point to the changes in public opinion regarding same-sex "marriage," announcing triumphantly that this is a sign of moral and even spiritual advancement. In reality, it is part of a larger trend toward immorality, a sign of moral bankruptcy and spiritual apostasy.

According to a May 13 Gallup report, "Just three years ago, support for gay marriage was 44 percent. The current 53 percent level of support is essentially double the 27 percent in Gallup's initial measurement on gay marriage, in 1996."

But let's put that data into a larger, cultural perspective. A May 20 Gallup report is headlined, "In U.S., Record-High Say Gay, Lesbian Relations Morally OK," with the subtitle reading, "Americans' tolerance of a number of moral issues up since 2001."

What exactly is meant by "tolerance"?

The report states, "Americans' views toward a number of moral issues have shifted significantly since 2001. Their acceptance of gay and lesbian relations has increased the most, up 19 percentage points in the past 12 years—to a record high of 59 percent today. Americans' tolerance toward having a baby outside of marriage is also now much greater, up 15 points since 2001 [actually, 2002], to the current 60 percent."

Oh yes, "tolerance" is alive and well!

So, the America that increasingly deems homosexual relationships to be morally acceptable is the same America that increasingly deems having children out of wedlock (once called "illegitimacy") to be morally acceptable. And this is supposed to be a sign of progress?

According to the poll, American approval of fornication—or, as the poll put it, "sex between an unmarried man and woman"—was up 10 percent (from 53 percent to 63 percent), while support for polygamy actually doubled, from 7 percent to 14 percent (keep your eye on that stat in the coming years). This is something to celebrate?

In 2001, Gallup didn't even ask the question of the moral acceptability of teenagers having sexual relationships, but in the current poll, only 63 percent found it morally wrong, while 32 percent expressed their moral approval. How enlightening!

The pollsters used the following script: "I'm going to read you a list of issues. Regardless of whether or not you should think it should be legal, for each one, please tell me whether you personally believe that in general it is morally acceptable or morally wrong."

Interestingly, while the word sex was used with reference to "sex between an unmarried man and woman" and "sex between teenagers," and while the word affair was used with reference to "married men and women having an affair," no such explicit or derogatory term was used with regard to homosexual practice. Rather, that was referred to as "gay or lesbian relations."

I wonder if the response would have been different if the pollsters had asked about "two men or two women having sex"—unless, of course, "gay and lesbian relations" are all merely platonic. (Please forgive my sarcasm.)

But I digress. What is clear is that American sexual morals are in steady decline, and there is very little that shames us these days. After all, this is the nation in which a young woman's quickest ticket to fame is a best-selling, graphic sex tape. Sometimes the girl's parents even gush with pride at their daughter's achievements, and at the risk of sounding trite, we can honestly say that what used to shame us now makes us famous.

It is against this backdrop that public approval for same-sex relationships continues to increase.

And let's not forget that the same media that incessantly pushes the cause of gay activism also promotes shows like Teen Mom, glamorizing young women who have children out of wedlock, along with shows like Big Love and Sister Wives, normalizing and even celebrating polygamy. And this has no effect on the public's perceptions?

Leading the way in these changing views toward gay and lesbian relations is the younger generation, aged 18-29. According to Gallup, in 1996, 41 percent of them supported same-sex "marriage"; today, that number is up to 70 percent. But this is the same age group that believes that roughly 30 percent of the population is gay or lesbian—an error of 1,000 percent! (The best studies put the number at roughly 3 percent.) Does the media have nothing to do with these skewed perspectives?

We should also remember that Barna polls conducted over the last 15 years indicate that only 0.5 percent of Americans aged 18-23 held to what Barna defined as a biblical worldview, in contrast with about 10 percent of the population as a whole. Is it any surprise, then, that they are so strongly supportive of same-sex relationships?

As for our country's increasing "tolerance," it is not happening quickly enough for 18-year-old Kaitlyn Hunt and her family. She has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl, one which her father says was consensual.

The Daily Kos reports, "Florida teen Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, is seeing her young life turned upside down and her future jeopardized simply because she fell in love. Unfortunately for her, she fell in love with a younger girl who has vindictive bigots for parents."

Her father, Steven Hunt, wants prosecutors "to drop the two charges filed against his daughter in February. A rainbow-colored 'Stop the hate, free Kate' page on the online petition site Change.org had more than 56,500 supporters calling for prosecutors to drop the charges Monday afternoon, and a similar 'Free Kate' Facebook group page had more than 30,000 members."

Well, just give it a little more time. Soon enough, these things will be accepted too. Immorality is trending.

Fire your boss: This is by far the sweetest resignation letter you’ll EVER see (LOOK)

Fire your boss: This is by far the sweetest resignation letter you'll EVER see (LOOK)

By day, Chris Holmes worked at London's Stansted Airport as an officer with Britain's Border Force. But by night, he was known as Mr. Cake — an aspiring baker with a burgeoning business in pastries and desserts.  So when the time came to quit his day job, Holmes did it in style.

Holmes turned up to work on Monday — his 31st birthday — with a cake inscribed with his letter of resignation:

View image on Twitter

Here's the text in full:

To The Management,
Border Force, Stansted:
Today is my 31st birthday, and having recently become a father I now realise have precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me, and other people, happy.
For that reason I hereby give notice of my resignation, in order that I may devote my time and energy to my family, and to my cake business which has grown steadily over the past few years.
I wish the organisation and my colleagues the best for the future and I remind you that, if you enjoy this cake, you can order more at www.mrcake.co.uk
Sincerely,
Chris Holmes
(Mr Cake)

Holmes came up with the idea six months ago, when his wife was pregnant (son, Benjamin, was born five weeks ago). "Timing-wise, it's quite a risk [to launch a business] with the economy as it is at the moment. But I have looked at the books time and again and every way I look at it, it is viable as a sole employment," he told the Guardian.

For his farewell treat,  Holmes created a carrot cake — also known as a "passion cake" — spiced with pecans and sultanas and coconut. The choice of passion cake was intentional, "given I was following my passion. If it all goes to plan, Ben is to thank for giving me that kick to get on and do something I have a passion for."

Holmes' resignation went down well with his soon-to-be-former colleagues. "The people who tasted it say it was very nice," said Toby Allanson, a spokesman for Border Force. Equally important, in the words of the assistant director of Border Force at Stansted, is that he "leaves with our very best wishes."

10 myths about common cold

10 myths about common cold

from ChaCha

coldThere is no connection between eating less and recovering from a fever, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids and continue eating healthy meals!

1. You'll Catch a Cold if You Go Outside in Cold Weather with Wet Hair

Cold and flu viruses are more common during the colder months, but there is absolutely no correlation between going outside with wet hair and catching a cold.

2. You Can Sweat Out a Cold

Many people are under the impression that covering up in layers of blankets or holding your head over a bowl of hot water will help push a cold out of your system, due to "sweating it out." This is false. It may make you feel better in the meantime, but it has no effect on the cold itself or how quickly it leaves your system.

3. Kissing Spreads Colds

If you have been avoiding kissing your significant other because one of you has a cold, it's time to put your fears to rest! It is very unlikely that kissing someone with a cold will make you sick. The mouth and lips only contain tiny amounts of the virus, and it takes a lot more than that for a cold to spread. Now you know!

4. Starve a Fever, Feed a Cold

While making sure to get enough calories when you're sick with a cold is beneficial, you shouldn't avoid food if you have a fever. There is no connection between eating less and recovering from a fever, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids and continue eating healthy meals!

5. Vitamin C Prevents Colds

There is no conclusive evidence to support the idea that getting plenty of vitamin C will prevent a cold. Getting too much of the vitamin, though, can be hazardous to your health; it can cause severe diarrhea, especially in children or the elderly.

6. Treating Symptoms Makes a Cold Last Longer

If someone has ever told you that treating your symptoms is a bad idea or makes you recover more slowly, don't believe them! Finding a way to treat your symptoms is actually beneficial in two ways:

  1. You will feel better!
  2. You will be less likely to spread the virus to others.

7. Antibiotics are the Cure

This one couldn't be less true! Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, and the common cold is cause by a virus. Antibiotics are only helpful against further complications from colds, such as sinusitis.

8. You'll Catch a Cold If You Don't Wear a Coat

If you want to run outside during the colder months without a coat, but a well-meaning friend or family member warned that you'll catch a cold, you can disregard their advice!

Though many people believe going outside in the winter without a coat will make you sick, it isn't true. As was said earlier, colds are caused by a virus, not the weather.

9. You Can Get the Flu from a Flu Shot

You can't get the flu from a flu shot. Some people believe that you can, because the vaccine contains elements of the flu virus, but here's why it doesn't work that way:

  • The flu virus in the vaccine is dead.
  • The shot only contains parts of the virus, not the whole thing.

Rest assured: your flu shot won't cause you to have the flu!

10. You Shouldn't Drink Milk When You Have a Cold

Drinking milk is rumored to increase mucus in your system when you have a cold, but it actually doesn't. It may feel like you're producing more mucus, but it isn't actually causing any increased production. If you have a cold and want to have a glass of milk, feel free to do so!

No kidding: 9 common health habits that could kill you

No kidding: 9 common health habits that could kill you

from ChaCha

sad-black-woman1

Any damage that breaks the skin in the triangle exposes the body to bacteria and infections, which can cause headaches, blindness, paralysis, and even death.

Harmful Health Habits

There's a new health terror sweeping the nation called the "Triangle of Death," and it lives on your face. Dr. Oz coined the term when he covered this health hazard on his show. The triangle includes the areas of your face extending from the corners of your mouth to the bridge of your nose.

What makes the area so dangerous is that the blood vessels there drain to the back of the head and connect to the veins at the base of the brain, which pumps that blood throughout the rest of the body. Any damage that breaks the skin in the triangle exposes the body to bacteria and infections, which can cause headaches, blindness, paralysis, and even death.

Maybe you should think twice before you pop that zit or try to get the crust out of your nose after a cold.

Taking a Shower

Your body has to maintain a certain temperature – neither too hot nor too cold – in order to function properly, but depending on how you like to take your showers, you could be putting yourself at risk.

Extreme and sudden exposure to both heat and cold can actually kill you, as it did a 62-year-old man when he was made to take a freezing-cold shower in a Chinese labor camp in 2008. Of course, the younger and more fit you are, the easier it is for your body to maintain the right internal temperature, but it doesn't hurt to be aware of the risk.

Your Shampoo

If your shampoo has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in it, you might consider switching to a different brand. SLS is responsible for the foamy consistency of the shampoo's lather, but it can also cause severe liver abnormalities and kidney damage that can be fatal.

Like most potentially dangerous chemicals, however, you'd have to ingest a LOT of shampoo in order to incur any serious damage, so don't chuck your favorite herbal scrub just yet.

Cleaning Your Ears

You've probably heard that you shouldn't put anything in your ear that's smaller than your thumb, but almost all of us violate that rule when we clean our ears with cotton swabs. The eardrum inside the ear (through that hole you're not supposed to poke around in!) is very fragile, and if you puncture it during a vigorous cleaning, you allow bacteria to slip past the broken tissue into your inner ear.

A man in Montreal died three years ago when he contracted meningitis from bacteria that entered through the eardrum, which he'd punctured from excessive and rigorous cleaning. Doctors even suggested that he had probably caused the initial bacterial infection expressly because he cleaned his ears too often.

Let that be a lesson to you: keep those swabs out of your ears!

Plucking Your Nose Hair

When you pluck those bristly strands out of your nose, you tear the skin around it, which allows bacteria to find its way into your body. Of course, this not only includes bacteria inside your nose that those hairs have been filtering out, but also anything you've stuffed up there from whatever you've touched before you went prospecting in your nasal cavities.

Once that bacteria creeps into your body from that ominous "Triangle of Death," you could find yourself with a host of health problems, including potentially fatal conditions. Using an electronic nose hair trimmer is much less risky and won't cause the same kind of pain and irritation that plucking does.

Cleaning Your Teeth

Okay, so we're not talking about brushing or flossing your teeth. Please, continue to do both! But be careful the next time you take a toothpick to drive your lunch leftovers out of the spaces between your teeth.

Toothpicks are sharp, and if you break a piece of the toothpick off, that pointy little end could cause one mountain of trouble inside your body. If it gets stuck in your throat, your body will swell around the irritant that can block your esophagus and prevent you from breathing.

It can also pierce or tear your intestinal tract, which would spill bacteria and digestive juices into the rest of your body and cause sepsis, which can and often does kill you. Yikes.

Popping a Zit

That triangle of death we talked about? Popping zits in this area is a huge risk factor for your health. Zits are filled with bacteria and puss, and when you pop a zit in "the triangle" you break the skin and allow that bacteria to creep into your body. Infections can cause headaches, blurred vision and blindness, paralysis, and even death.

Popping zits also causes scarring, so if your overall livelihood isn't motivation enough, the fact that your perfect visage will be marred from all that pimple pressing hopefully will.

Drinking Water

Yep, it's true. Water is great for your body, and you need to drink water throughout the day to rehydrate, but if you drink too much water for the kidneys to process – for adults, roughly 15 liters over the course of a day – you could risk water overdose.

Excess water that the kidneys can't process flows into salt-rich areas in the body, specifically the cells. Because there is a finite amount of space inside the brain, water-logged brain cells will cause the brain to swell with no room for relief. According to Scientific American, this condition can result in seizures, coma, respiratory arrest, brain stem herniation, and death.

Early symptoms include headache and vomiting.

Eating Vegetables

If you're a big fan of spuds, you'd better double check the skin before you settle on baked potatoes for dinner.

Solanine is a naturally occurring toxin that forms when potatoes are exposed to too much light. If the color of the potato just under the skin is green, it's a good indicator that Solanine has built up in the potato. If ingested, symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and intestinal issues.

Don't chuck tonight's dinner plans if you find your potatoes look a little green, though. Just make sure you cut away the green portions of the skin before you cook and eat them.

Eating Fruits

Apples, pears, peaches, mangoes, and apricots all have one thing in common: they contain a chemical called amygdalin, which in large amounts can turn into hydrogen cyanide.

Amygdalin is found in the seeds, pits, and kernels of these fruits, and in (very) large quantities can be fatal. So you shouldn't use it as an excuse to skip healthy fruits altogether, but it's a good case for consuming foods in moderation.

Nigeria seeks Niger Republic’s support to battle Boko Haram

Nigeria seeks Niger Republic's support to battle Boko Haram

Nigeria is seeking the support of Niger Republic to halt cross border movement by Boko Haram men being dislodged from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states where a military operation is ongoing.

Niger, along with Chad and Cameroun border the three states which are under a state of emergency.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nurudeen Muhammed on Monday night delivered the request for help from President Goodluck Jonathan to his Nigerien counterpart, Mahamadou Issoufou, in Niamey.

"We currently have military operations under way in Nigeria in three federal states to combat terrorism and we would like to have Niger's support in the common fight against these terrorists," Muhammed told Nigerien television.

Nigeria and Niger signed a bilateral defence pact in October 2012 that includes sharing intelligence on Islamist groups and joint military exercises.

The deal stipulates that a request for military aid by one nation cannot be refused by the other.

Nigeria and Niger share a porous frontier of more than 1,500 km (940 miles). The fighting in the northeast has pushed more than a thousand refugees across the border into Niger in the past few weeks, according to United Nations (UN) estimates.

Soldiers from Niger and Chad participated with Nigerian forces in a joint assault on Boko Haram fighters last month in Baga, a fishing settlement on the shores of Lake Chad.

President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday declared a state of emergency in Borno –the epicentre of the sect's activities – and two other states, Yobe and Adamawa, all in the northeast, to combat Boko Haram's malignant insurgency.

Since then, soldiers deployed in the states have been battling to rout out the sect's members, who have been fighting back.

On Sunday, the military announced the death of three soldiers in the battle. One soldier was also declared missing, although scores of terrorists were killed.

"They have been putting up fierce resistance and they are very, very well-armed with weapons from Libya," a senior military official told The Guardian of London, adding that most of the militants who have waged a bloody four-year battle to create an Islamist state have scattered across the borders.

A renewed military campaign, including aerial bombardments of Boko Haram training camps in three remote states which were put under emergency rule this month, has led to the capture of almost 200 militants and the death of dozens in a week, according to the military. In one raid, a helicopter gunship was hit by anti-aircraft and anti-tank fire, the military said.

North African country Libya recently emerged from a civil war which claimed almost one million lives including that of its long-standing President Col. Muhammar Ghadaffi.

Although a transition government led by the rebels who flushed out Ghadaffi is in place, Libya is littered with weapons and small arms.

The Senate and the House of Representatives yesterday endorsed the declaration of a state of emergency in the Northeast states.

The House cut some of the powers the President requested in the implementation of the state of emergency.

Also yesterday, President Jonathan ordered the release of some arrested Boko Haram members especially women and minors.

Among the beneficiaries of the order are wives and relations of Boko Haram leaders in custody. They are to be released after a re-orientation, according to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ). Also yesterday the DHQ said Nigerian soldiers in Mali would not be withdrawn for special operations in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states against Boko Haram insurgents.

According to a statement by the Defence spokesman, Brig-Gen. Chris Olukolade, the order for the release of women, minors and others had been communicated to field units and the Joint Task Force.

The statement said: "Consequent upon the directives of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters will be releasing from detention a number of persons being held in connection with terrorist activities.

"The move is in furtherance of the Federal Government position in response to requests by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Reconciliation. The measure, which is in line with presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country, will result in freedom for suspects including all women under custody.

"The details of the directives and those to benefit from this gesture have been communicated to field units and the Joint Task Force.

"The beneficiaries will be released to the State Governors who will be involved in further rehabilitation before these suspects are released to their respective community leaders/relations."

In a separate statement, the DHQ said Nigerian soldiers in Mali would not be withdrawn for special operation in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe against Boko Haram insurgents

The statement added: "As the operation to rid our country of terrorist activities continues, the Defence Headquarters wishes to reassure Nigerians that the Nigerian military is quite capable and ready to discharge this duty professionally and creditably well.

"The report, therefore, in a section of the press that Nigerian troops are to be withdrawn from Mali to face the ongoing insurgency is complete falsehood.

"There is certainly no need for such action now as the human and material resources of the Armed Forces of Nigeria are being meticulously deployed and quite able to meet its present internal and external assignments.

"As a matter of fact, the normal and scheduled rotation of troops in various missions will continue.

"This routine should not be misunderstood or misrepresented to misinform Nigerians and the international community.

"These times are too sensitive for anyone to engage in unnecessary sensation, speculation or rumour mongering on military affairs please."

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima, said he is in support of the decision of President Jonathan to release some detainees suspected of terrorist activities.

Shettima said the decision of thePresident may bring Boko Haram leaders to the negotiation table.

The governor made his position known in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Alhaji Isa Umar Gusau.

The statement said: "I am in the picture of the very welcome development and I look forward to receiving them. It is cheering news for me and the government of Borno State because it will no doubt help in fast tracking the peaceful resolution process which like I have always said, remains the long term solution to the crisis.

"Releasing the detainees will further show the commitment and sincerity of the federal government to the peace negotiation which should attract the sect members to the negotiation table and increase community participation in the process.

"The State Government is dutifully committed to every lawful and reasonable efforts that aims at the return of peace and security of lives and property in Borno, the Northern region and Nigeria in its entirety since no society can achieve any meaningful and steady progress in an atmosphere of violence"

Massive sinkhole kills five in south China town of Shenzhen

FIVE people have died after a 10-metre wide sinkhole opened up at the gates of an industrial estate in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese boom town neighbouring Hong Kong.

The Shenzhen Longgang district government said on its verified page on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, that five people had died and added that it was investigating the incident.

The sinkhole formed just outside the Huamao Industrial Park in Shenzhen on Monday evening, at a time when many factory workers would have been changing shifts, according to the website of Beijing-based newspaper the Guangming Daily.

The state-run Shanghai Daily newspaper said that rescuers saved one man.

Reports said it was unclear how many people had fallen into the hole in total, but the search was continuing on Tuesday.

Sinkholes in China are often blamed on construction works and the country's rapid pace of development.

Surveillance cameras in March captured images of a security guard being swallowed by a sinkhole, also in Shenzhen.

Two months ago a man was killed when his bedroom was swallowed by a eight metre sinkhole in Florida, in the US.
