MTN Nigeria which accounts for 66% of all the internet subscriptions made on GSM networks, has announced yet another data product,"Shared Data Bundles"to its data using customers. The new product brings MTN's Data Share–a product which was previously available to only corporate postpaid customers to individual prepaid customers. It is also similar to one that Glo introduced last year, though it is unclear if that is still being offered as the information about it is no longer on their site.
Shared data bundles from MTN, allow customers who have data plans from 250mb and above to share their active data plan with up to 5 other users. Shared plans are split equally across the "Sponsor" and "Beneficiaries" so that a beneficiary manages his/her "share" of the data plan independently.
Only monthly plans from 250mb (i.e 250mb, 500mb, 1GB and 5GB) can be shared.
If you want to share yours, here is how to:
- First, register for the service by dialing *131*2*1# or by texting "Reg" to 131.
- You will receive a confirmation SMS with a system generated 4 DIGIT PIN.
- Change the default PIN that was sent to a new PIN (that you would remember) by dialling *131*2*5# and using the on screen directions or by texting "Change OLD_PIN NEW_PIN NEW_PIN" (eg Change 0000 1234 1234) to 131.
- After changing the PIN, you can then add a beneficiary by dialing *131*2*3# and following the on screen menu or by texting "Add <Phone> <PIN>" to 131. You can add up to 5 beneficiaries.
- When you are done adding beneficiaries, you can now share your available data bundle among your beneficiaries by sending the keyword "Share <PIN>" to 131 or dial *131*2*4#.
- Once shared, the data bundle will be divided equally between the sponsor and all her/his beneficiaries. E.g For a sponsor with 4 beneficiaries and 1GB, both the sponsor and the beneficiaries will receive 250MB each.
